#1 Ohio State 67, #2 Georgetown 60 (Final)

To me, the turning point in this game began just 2 1/2 minutes into it.

Georgetown's strategy was to take Oden out of the mix and dominate us inside to Hibbert, and it didn't work for two reasons.

Much maligned on this board during the season, Twigs came in and continued his stellar performance in the NCAA. He did a great job and Green especially seemed surprised. Twigs doesn't do that, we don't win.

More importantly, our tenacious defense completely unsettled them. Twelve points off turnovers in the first half was huge. Those guys don't do that and Georgetown starts cutting us to shreds, instead Georgetown can't hold on to the ball and Buckeyes are flying everywhere. Losing Oden forced us to take Georgetown out of the half court game. We ran with the ball and they couldn't. We penetrated repeatedly for relatively easy buckets and drew the fouls on Hibbert.

And when Georgetown adjusted and came back at the start of the second half, we did it again. Losing Hibbert at the very moment that Oden came back in was an incredible challenge to which Georgetown did not rise. Having adjusted to try to stop our guard play, they had no answer inside.

But the real key to our win in my mind is that we played the best defense I have seen this team play.

One more time, guys, one more time.

I thought the guys played an amazing "team" game! Everyone seemed to play their role and contribute. Very balanced scoring...every Buckeye to step on the floor scored and the team played great defense. I still say that superstars like Conley and Oden are a must to get us here, but without the role players like Harris, Lighty, Butler...we have no glue to fill in the gaps. Hats off to everyone for stepping up and playing their roles. The guys played aggressive yet under control the whole game. Amazing victory!

David Lighty, Mike Conley Jr. and Ron Lewis celebrate Ohio State's victory over Georgetown.

ATLANTA -- Georgetown was every bit the big, imposing team that wrapped its arms around Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament a year ago and never let go.

These Buckeyes aren't anywhere near the same, though, and this time the Hoyas could not get a handle on them.
Exploiting Georgetown's size with their quick hands on defense and fast feet in transition, the Buckeyes scored 22 points off turnovers last night and ran past the Hoyas 67-60 in an NCAA national semifinal in the Georgia Dome.

Ohio State freshman David Lighty reacts after scoring and getting fouled late in the Buckeyes' 67-60 victory over Georgetown at the Georgia Dome in the Final Four.

ATLANTA -- The huge sign over the Georgia Dome entrance last night declared "The Road Ends Here," but not for Ohio State. Not yet.

Thad Matta's Buckeyes disposed of Georgetown 67-60 in an NCAA Tournament national semifinal. Monday night, they will try to win the second national championship in school history when they take on the winner of last night's other game, between defending national champion Florida and UCLA.
Led by fabulous freshmen Mike Conley Jr. and Greg Oden and senior sharpshooter Ron Lewis, the Buckeyes pushed the school's best basketball record ever to 35-3.

Ohio State basketball notebook
Buckeyes make most of extra time to prepare

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ATLANTA -- Having almost a week to prepare for Georgetown was much better for the Ohio State men's basketball team than the day it had last season.

Two days after the Buckeyes beat Davidson in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, they lost to Georgetown by 18 points.
"It's difficult to prepare for that style of play with a one-day turnaround, as we had to do last year," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said during the week leading up to the NCAA national semifinal last night in the Georgia Dome.

ATLANTA -- The bigwigs from CBS took the two kids, the ones the NBA is trying to get its clutches on, and trotted them out onto the court for a postgame chit-chat on national television.

Greg Oden and his longtime pal, Mike Conley Jr., stood there patiently, a couple of Ohio State freshmen ready for a round of postgame love from the talking heads of March.
All the other players were already out of the picture, heading off to their locker room like extras in college basketball's premier Broadway play.
If not for those small-role players, however, the curtain would have come down on the most magical Ohio State basketball season in 45 years.

OSU makes Green a nonfactor

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ATLANTA -- Greg Oden was in the air, all 7 feet, 270 pounds of him. His head was above the rim, his eyes were on the hoop, and for a cushy landing, he had Georgetown's Jeff Green below.
"Every time I dribbled, somebody tried to knock it out of my hand, so I just said, 'Forget it. I'm jumping. I don't even know where I'm at,' " Oden said of his thoughts as he launched from the free-throw line. "I thought I had it, but it kind of rimmed out. I was kind of disappointed."
With 6:37 left in Ohio State's 67-60 win last night in an NCAA national semifinal, that was not the play that won the game. Oden even missed the one-handed dunk attempt.

ATLANTA -- Greg Oden vs. Roy Hibbert?
Look closely. You might have to rerun that TiVo a couple of times to see it. This was the blockbuster movie that turned out to be nothing more than an exciting trailer.
It had a happy ending for Oden and his Ohio State teammates -- the 67-60 victory sends them into the national championship game Monday night -- but the titanic heavyweight bout that everyone spent so much time talking about was hardly the Thrilla in Atlanta, unless you get your jollies from watching giants lounging on the bench.

Oden steps up with big second half for Ohio State

Ohio State center Greg Oden scored 13 points Saturday, all in the second half, during a 67-60 win over Georgetown.

ATLANTA ? Greg Oden had plenty of time to rest up for his big second half.

After playing only three foul-plagued minutes in the opening half, Oden had 13 points and nine rebounds after the break to help power Ohio State past Georgetown 67-60 on Saturday night in the Final Four semifinal.

Oden, who has been called for four or more fouls in four straight NCAA tournament games, managed to avoid fouling out against the Hoyas while battling 7-foot-2 Roy Hibbert.

It was the first time Oden has faced a bigger center, and the freshman asserted himself in the second half after having no points or rebounds in the first half.

Oden scored on hook shots and on a powerful two-handed jam, and even tried a tomahawk jam, soaring toward the rim from just past the foul line. Oden missed the jam, but drew a foul and made a free throw.
