.. if they feel Golden at 215 is a better prospect at 200 and they want to make sure he can gain the weight, keep his speed and shiftiness and be the prospect they think he can be...

I am sure some kids would take this the wrong way, but in the coaches eyes that might show that the kid wasn't dedicated to the program anyways and they will move on...

Rivals has the certified weight at 189. 15 pounds puts him at 6' 204.

With the type of back he is, this is not an unreasonable request imo.

agreed...but why must he put the weight on BEFORE an offer is extended especially if he's going to redshirt as a freshman at OSU? I do think it's an unreasonable request and smacks a little of stringing the kid out as a back up plan. Bud would be better suited looking elsewhere in my opinion because it doesn't sound like OSU really wants him.

I can see that point of view also. He is obviously not at the top of the board so looking around or even committing to a good situation is definitely a valid decision.

i think you also have to look at it that the coaching staff is coaching bud, they are looking to get these kids to improve themselves. i also think you have to realize that a writer wrote this through the quotes of a 17 year old kid. play telephone twice, see what happens. now play telephone twice off of advice of a 17 year old.

I think you are oversimplifying it. If he is on top of the board, such a request is never mentioned. Right now, there are 4 possibly 5 targets ahead of him.

agreed. my point was that bud gaining 8,12,15,17 lbs isnt not the primary factor in him being in or out, him getting an offer or not.

from my exposure the staff has given bud the areas he can improve, he can effect. giving bud an action plan to work from. that being said their are factors on bud becoming a buckeye are outside of bud's control... if bud were to meet all his points/marks/goals from the staff he still maybe on the outside looking in. the staff is doing this with all their serious targets and commitments...

the kid is working for an offer for free school, free room and board and offer to wear scarlet and gray on saturdays. i dont think its unreasonable for the staff to tell the kid he has to wear a pink spedo and play hop scotch in pregame. i busted my butt to pay for college and while they kids may not get "paid" they get a stipen, food, clothing, books, schools and tutors. they live like kings and walk up and down high like kings compared to what i went through.

that being said i could never bring myself to agree with you, so yes i agree with H&G...

But I don't think thats the case. tOSU probably hopes that they are able to get some recruits they have rated higher than Bud, but if they fall through, they would offer Bud. I agree that if there was no chance he could get an offer that we should tell him. But imagine the two Florida guys both stay down south, then maybe Bud becomes our top target. You can't ever write anyone off this early in the process, so maybe they are giving him a goal that they think will both improve him as a player and keep him interested in us and us involved with him.

I don't think Tressel is stringing Golden along, that's not his style. It just seems with the recruiting momentum that has built up with OSU that JT can afford to pick and choose.

Also, sure Golden could redshirt and gain the 15 lbs. To that the coaches may very well respond: "Why should we wait for you? We have kids working their tails off in the weight room that may come here in your class or the next year's class and be ready to play in the spring, let alone redshirt. Why should we take you over them?"

OSU is highly attractive to RB recruits and that means a lot of competition. Cost of poker has gone up, and Mr. Golden needs to ante up if he wants to play.

In person, Golden fit the great running back measurables we saw on film. He is a tall, well-built kid with the body structure to hold an additional 15-20 pounds of lean bulk to complement his downhill, north-south running style. His frame really impresses you without pads on. While lean, you can see his naturally strong, well-defined upper-body with the broad shoulders to eventually carry more weight and the load as a college running back. We liked Golden's functional strength and physicality fighting off the press from linebackers during the day as well; hands were equally impressive.
