Ohio QB to take one more visit
Quarterback DeVontae Payne (Cleveland, Ohio/South) has made official visits to Toledo, Akron, Eastern Michigan and Texas Southern. He plans to visit Southern this weekend before selecting a college.
Payne has crossed Akron and Texas Southern off his list. Eastern Michigan has the edge over Toledo prior to Payne's final official visit.
"I like the new coaching staff at Eastern Michigan," Payne said. "I like Coach (Ron) English. And I like the offensive coordinator, Ken Karcher. He said I was the first person he called when he got the job."
Payne said he would probably wait until national signing day to announce his college choice.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
In recruiting football players who can transform Eastern Michigan into a winner, coach Ron English would seem to have a lot working against him.
Eastern has lost 15 consecutive games and has not finished with a winning record in more than a decade. English faces a lot of competition from more-successful Mid-American Conference programs in the areas he recruits. And nearby Detroit, in the current economy, is not a dream destination for someone looking for a job after graduation.
"But this has been my experience in recruiting, particularly at this level," English said. "I think the more patient you are, the better off you are, because I think players are going to become available. I do think if we evaluate and take the right guys, we'll be fine."
Proof of that, English hopes, will be redshirt freshman quarterback Devontae Payne of Cleveland.
"We think he's going to be a good football player here," English said.
Payne, second on the Eastern Michigan depth chart behind sophomore Alex Gillett, looks every bit the specimen Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor is. Payne is 6 feet 61/2 inches and weighs 231 pounds.
He was not the prospect Pryor was. Pryor was the most-sought quarterback in the country in high school. Payne, from South High in Cleveland, might have been the best in Ohio in what was a lukewarm year for quarterbacks in the state, ESPN analyst Bill Kurelic said.
But while major programs like Ohio State and Penn State showed interest in Payne, none offered him a scholarship. He did not qualify academically until late in the recruiting process and was largely a hidden talent because he attended only a couple of summer camps, at Kentucky and Toledo, before his senior year.
"Financially, I couldn't afford camps," Payne said.

Devontae Payne dropped back and unleashed the ball, watching as it spiraled toward the left sideline and into the hands of a streaking Lloyd Henry. Henry caught the ball near midfield and ran untouched into the end zone for a 14-0 advantage.
The 98-yard scoring strike was one of three TD passes Payne threw on a chilly, sun-splashed afternoon. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound transfer from Eastern Michigan University connected on 8 of 11 passes for 185 yards as he helped the Black squad edge the Orange team 24-21.
