Withrow's Gates violates team rules
Could miss tourney game
ENQUIRER STAFF REPORTS

Withrow basketball star Yancy Gates did not play in Friday night's 51-41 win over Hughes, and coach Walt McBride said it was for "disciplinary reasons."

Gates will return Thursday
BY TOM GROESCHEN | [email protected]

McBride will not elaborate on why Gates was suspended, but said Gates will return when the Tigers start sectional play against Mount Healthy (at Mason) on Thursday.

If Withrow makes a run at a state title berth over the next three games, the second half of the Tigers' game Tuesday night will be remembered as the pivotal moment that sent them there.

Yancy Gates, Withrow's star 6-foot-9 senior forward, had just six points at halftime, and Withrow was shooting just 32.4 percent from the field. But Gates made 10-of-13 shots he took the rest of the way, finishing with 33 points and 14 rebounds. "My team got me going," said Gates. "They boosted my confidence. We kind of had a slow first half."
