'08 OH PF Yancey Gates (Cincinnati Verbal)

Gates, Tabler 2nd-team all-Ohio
BY MIKE DYER | [email protected]

Gates, a 6-9 junior, is considered the area's top recruit for the 2008 class and is being courted by many schools.
Gates is expected to make his college decision after the summer, Withrow coach Walt McBride said.
Gates averaged 19.4 points for the Tigers (18-8), who lost to St. X 51-48 in the regional final.
"Yancy was the heart and soul of the team," McBride said.

I went to the X vs Withrow basketball game, and was not impressed with this kid AT ALL. I think he was something like 2 of 9 from for freethrows, and didn't seem that dominant at all. On top of that, he was ejected at the end of the game (when it was pretty much over anyway, but imo still shows lack of self control and discpline).

Mine would have been. Yancey has long been knocked for his work ethic and being a lazy player, rarely playing tough D or working hard on the boards. He has the kind of God-given talent to still dominate most of his opponents on the high school level, but I have a feeling he'll be in for a nasty surprise when he hits the next level and the talent level rises. Don't get me wrong, I don't know the kid and have nothing personal against him, but he has too much talent to continue wasting. The technical is also a little disappointing. Hopefully his attitude will change so he can reach his full potential.

Dallas Lauderdale refutes the point you're trying to make about buckeye homerism, plenty of fans are a little too hard on him (largely b/c of how spoiled we are with most of Thad's recruits).

Yes. I don't follow basketball recruiting close enough to know what teams kids are on, and when I showed up to the game and recognized his name, and saw how big he was I thought X was in for a tough night. The kid had a couple dunks, but on the whole I was VERY underwhelmed with the kid. Looked very immature and lazy as already mentioned, but he is still a junior so he's got a year to mature and grow, but at this point I'm not impressed with him at all.

thats the knock on nearly every star player at the hs level. if he has the same issues at higher levels (aau) then it may be an issue. lets face it to a lot of these kids the game is boring. a reason why some schools like oak hill may be a good choice for a lot of kids. throw in he has kids hanging all over him, beating on him, targeting him etc every night. i dont put much stock into hs basketball. you can get the kids skill set, though most of the time surrounding talent is to inferior to get a good look at the kids. thats why aau is the best judge. you take 799 teams in ohio and crunch that down to maybe, maybe a dozen teams who play at an elite to semi elite level...

Gates Man-Child at Real Deal

Yancey Gates the 6-9 235-pound man-child from the Cleveland Basketball Club is a monster when motivated. He was super in game one today but struggled at times in late afternoon game. Make no mistake: Gates will be a stud down the road. He already has looks coming from Ohio State, Florida, Pittsburgh and Louisville among a long list of schools

Forget the win over Xavier last season or the Big East victory over West Virginia.
The biggest moment for the University of Cincinnati basketball program under first-year coach Mick Cronin occurred Sunday night, when Withrow High School junior Yancy Gates announced that he will attend UC in 2008-09.
Gates will make the announcement at a news conference today.

Gates hoping others follow
Says UC option for elite players
BY BILL KOCH | [email protected]

1x1.gif

When he was in fifth grade, Yancy Gates was already 6 feet 4 and displaying remarkable athleticism for his size. His father, Tony Dees, looked at him and knew he might have something special on his hands.
He told Gates then that if he dedicated himself to the game, if he was willing to put in the time and the work, he had the talent to play college basketball and beyond.
"He started to work and he started to believe," Dees said. "I knew if he did the right things coming up that he would get to this point."

Gates still has plenty of work ahead of him, but the 6-foot-8, 245-pound Withrow junior has already begun to prove his father right. He formally announced Monday afternoon at the Cincinnati Public Schools Education Center that he will attend the University of Cincinnati in 2008.

Ohio's best
With Yancy Gates winning his matchup against B.J. Mullens, is Gates clearly the best big man in Ohio? Will his placement in the next set of rankings reflect that?
? Dan from Cincinnati

Gates did play very well against Mullens in Cincinnati Withrow's 58-57 win over Canal Winchester, but Mullens is clearly the best big man in Ohio ? if not the entire country.
Gates played as well as I've ever seen him play, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Mullens, on the other side, had 16 points and 19 rebounds.
Both players have tremendous size, athleticism and skill. Mullens, as was evident at times during this game, just doesn't always play with the highest energy level. Gates also has the tendency to play with less than the highest energy level, but that is not the primary reason he is ranked in the lower level of our four-star prospects. A lot of top prospects have difficulty maintaining a high level of effort.
