Ohio State has offered, but there may not be a spot by the time he is ready to make a decision.

Hey Bn I think I am going to have to disagree with you on this one. I know we are sitting really good for Laurderdale and Koufos, but we are in a different period of tOSU bball.

I think that we can put them two on the court at the same time and bring gates off the bench. Gates is a top 5 player in the country, Matta will pull out all the stops to try and get him. I know it is still a little early, but being top 5 is very high and in years past that means that he could of been a threat to jump straight to the NBA. There is no way Matta will not push for talent like that.

I don't think 44820 is saying that Matta won't make a push for Gates...I think what he is trying to say is that it might be a tough sell given all the talent we will be bringing in in '06, '07 and '08. A class in '08 that includes Offutt, Mullens and Gates would be great, but Yancy might want to go somewhere where he has more of an opportunity at early playing time. But I'm sure that won't stop Matta and Peters from trying to get Yancy in Columbus, especially since he and Mullens are AAU teammates.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification.

I still think that Gates becomes a buck in the end.

if we take a shot at Yancy and he chooses somewhere else, than that is fine.

but if we say, well we have too many players, sorry, I'm not ok with that.

sorry Marvin Williams, were stacked...something is not right here?

As previously mentioned by Wadc...........I am not stating they will not make a hard push for him, OSU is making a push for him, he has been offered, I just think by the time he is ready to make a decision that a spot may not be there. Do I hope I am wrong, of course I do.

Ohio’s Best Boys Basketball Players
Buckeye state boasts more talent than ever before

By Steve Helwagen

Over the course of the summer, Ohio’s best boys basketball players showed their stuff in various AAU and summer camp events from coast to coast.
These events helped Ohio’s best players earn reputations as the nation’s very best. The national rankings supplied by ScoutHoops.com are dotted with players from Ohio.

Five of the current seniors are in the national top 100, led by Dayton Dunbar’s Daequan Cook at No. 16. Even better is the Class of 2007, where seven Ohio prospects are listed among the top 50. That group is led by the North College Hill duo of O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker, ranked first and fourth nationally, respectively.

The sophomore class in Ohio also boasts two of the nation’s top 15 prospects, including Cincinnati Hughes’ Yancey Gates at No. 5.

“You would be hard pressed to go back and find three years consecutively where there is this type of talent in the state of Ohio,” said HoopScoopOnline.com Ohio editor Chris Johnson. “And there is not only talent but also some size. In that sophomore class, there are four or five really good players who are already 6-8 or taller.”

The Ohio talent quotient would be even better if Herb Pope, a 6-8 forward considered a top-10 national junior, had followed through with his stated plan to transfer to a school in Ohio. Instead, he began the new school year at his old school in Aliquippa, Pa.

With the summer camp and AAU season over, Johnson has reassessed his lists of Ohio’s top prospects and updated them. The following is a look at the top prospects in each class in Ohio high school boys basketball, as rated by Johnson.

Sophomores-To-Be (Class of 2008)

* 2. Yancey Gates, 6-8, power forward, Cincinnati Hughes (SH, fifth nationally in sophomore class) – Gates averaged 13.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Johnson on Gates: “He has tremendous size for a rising sophomore. He is already 225 pounds. He did well at the adidas Superstar Camp.” Ohio State has reportedly already offered.

A look at the 2008 class.....

Yancey Gates (pictured) dropped 20 points in his Cincinnati Hughes debut this season. After a freshman campaign in which he offered up 13 points a game, the bump in scoring was to be expected. Gates, a strong and diverse power forward, has that unique blend of ability and size. He goes 225 pounds and so far in his career he’s found ways to make his presence felt.

Gates would be a huge get. Who knows what the depth will look like when his class comes in. I know we have Mullens and potentially Koufas and Lauderdale, but you can never be too sure they've (1) coming to OSU and (2) live up to their potential

why does everyone say that he wont come in because of the depth(Lauderdal, Mullins, Kofous)and then they say how much he plays on the perimeter...if he is a perimeter player at heart than wont he look at the depth at perimeter?...and then if he comes here, we can work him into the post...i think if he if he wants to play on the perimeter, than he can in the 4 high 1 low offense that Matta runs.

I think you have to look at the possible depth on the perimeter when Gates would be ready for a decision, tOSU could possibly have Koufos, Lighty and Diebler in front of him, it could be a factor for Gates.
