'08 OH LB/RB Brandon Beachum (Penn State signee)

I know that we have offered a lot of other LB's before him and I know there is a possibility of him growing into a DE...and a lot of people have said that an offer=commit so do you guys see him getting that offer???

Question to no one in particular:

What is it that separates Hale and Sweat from Beachum? On paper they appear to be very similar (negligible size/speed differences), all are accomplished on the field and all have good film, etc.

I'm just not sure I understand what puts two OOS LB's ahead of what appears to be an equally talented in-state guy from a high school program that could be a major contributor this year to tOSU.

I know the staff knows what they're doing, but I'm just not sure I understand this one. In general it seems to me that there is a lot of upside in offering a kid who is amongst the top at his position AND has a buddy or two at the same school who we would also like to offer (i.e. Mooney, Coffman, G'ville almost every other year...).

Anyone?

The only I can think of at this point is that there are players that are more physical at this point. While Brandon is a fine tackler, the pattern you see on film on past OSU LBer recruits is that they bring down the ball-carrier on contact, no doubt. Brandon has good speed, but I think Zordich is the LBer on the team with more of a presence. Of course, Brandon's body is only beginning to grow into that of a LBer, and it is expected that he will add some muscle and strength. So my WAG is that he will either get an offer at camp or with a few games into the season.

I don't think Beachum's measurables are near as good as Hale's or Torrences.

They're good, but he's not a freak athlete who is incredibly explosive ala Thad Gibson, Devoe Torrence, or Shayne Hale.

Torrence, Hale, and Gibson are all sub 4.6 40' guys who have an awesome burst with good size. I'd say Beachum's 40 is more around 4.7 or so, and he's slightly shorter and maybe a little bit lighter than the others. I think he's a good player, but I think he might be a slight bit overrated at this point from watching his highlight films. Devoe Torrence is the real deal, and many people think Zordich is better as well. Not to mention OOS linebackers like Christian Wilson, Sweat, and Hale.

However, don't take my word for gospel, many people on here know a lot more about beachum than I do, as I'm only going off of what i've read, heard and seen on highlight reels.

Hale has the potential to be the #1 backer in the country...His measurables are great for the Mike position, and his film backs up the offer.

As for Sweat there are some that think that he is the better football player of the 2, of he and Hale. The staff looks for a guy that is going to make tackles at lb and that is all Sweat does.

Also Beachum is a basic lock if offered so they know they can afford to evaluate him longer, as you really don't hear Beachum's name as the lb that is getting the big tackle numbers and making plays, kinda like Marcus Freeman in our system, he is very athletic, just isnt making the tackles and getting in the right spots. They might want to take 3 lb's, so therefore they can wait. Also keep in mind that Beachum battled an injury most of the year and they might want to see if how he recovers...

And one other thing is that the staff will not offer a kid to get his buddy. If he has an offer then he is good enough. Can't afford to have a wasted schollie to just to get someones teammate.

These responses help. I understand that you don't want to waste a schol to get another kid, I was just saying IF the teammate is also qualified. I think everyone gets that though, and the extra analysis was helpful. Thanks
