'08 OH DT Jerel Worthy (Michigan State Verbal)

I would not mind seeing Worthy here at all. I am going to go ahead and assume he is a backup plan right now to Goebel. I don't necessarily think we need 2 DT, but it wouldn't hurt. I would take anybody who wants to jump on board here on the DL. If Heyward is moved to DE (as has been speculated) then 2 would be necessary here, but I have not heard solid stuff regarding that yet. Goebel and one of Worthy, Mobley, B.Thompson, J.Thompson or Jones (from the guys on the scene now) would be a great haul here at the DT position.

Worthy is a very good player that would be worth taking a shot on down the line if a couple spots open up...which is exactly what this situation appears to be (from articles and some coaches around the area that I've talked to). He just needs a solid senior film really because I think he is a work in progress and could really improve.

From the Wisconsin site...Louisville, NC State, Ohio State, West Virginia and Wisconsin are waiting to see senior film. Seems to favor Nebraska and Michigan State (both offered) but additional offers could change things.

Worthy to use sacking prowess at Michigan St.

Wayne defensive tackles goes with Spartans because of defensive system, former teammate Ringer.

HUBER HEIGHTS ? Wayne High School sack master Jerel Worthy has taken himself off the market, verbally committing to Michigan State University.
The 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive tackle chose the Spartans over Nebraska, North Carolina State, West Virginia and Cincinnati.

"They lead the nation in sacks and Coach (Mark) Dantonio has transformed the defense up there," Worthy said. "It seemed like a good fit for me. Former teammate Javon Ringer is a key player there and that also drew me in. Javon was like a mentor to me when I was at C-J (Chaminade-Julienne)."
Worthy, who played his freshman and sophomore years at C-J and his junior and this his senior year at Wayne, leads the Warriors' run-stuffing defense with 10 sacks.
"Jerel has great explosion off the ball and the ability to get to the quarterback," Wayne coach Jay Minton said. "He has those instincts you just don't coach."

MSU football: Worthy turning pro
Spartan junior says father's health a factor in decision

EAST LANSING - By the time Jerel Worthy sat down next to Mark Dantonio at a table in the auditorium of Michigan State's Clara Bell Smith Center, there was little suspense left about whether or not he was going to the NFL.

He was going. And Dantonio was good with it.

"The general consensus is the top 50 players in the draft, most indicate the first round at some point," Dantonio said Thursday of feedback he received from NFL personnel people on Worthy's expected draft position. "When you have an opportunity like that, it's very difficult to pass up because of the financial situation that you would be in."

And that financial situation, Worthy revealed, is important because of a stroke his father, Bobby Smith, suffered in early 2010. Smith suffered paralysis on the left side of his body and does not have medical insurance.

"My father is slowly but surely progressing back to where he needs to be," said Worthy, a 6-foot-3, 310-pound defensive tackle from Huber Heights, Ohio. "One thing that kind of led me to this decision is the simple fact that he's not getting the required therapy needed to make as fast of a recovery as I would like."

Worthy becomes the second player to leave early under Dantonio, joining receiver Devin Thomas in 2008 (2nd round, No. 34 overall to Washington). More may be on the way - junior cornerback Johnny Adams is still considering his options this year - for a program that has upgraded its talent and won 22 games in the past two seasons.

Worthy, an All-American fourth-year junior, is projected by some analysts as a first-round pick, as he's been since the end of the 2011 draft. Still, he said Thursday his mind wasn't made up until celebrating Monday's 33-30 triple-overtime win over Georgia in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla.
