HYATTSVILLE, Md. -- Four white U.S. mail bins were lined up side by side on a table in the athletic department film room at DeMatha Catholic High School, miniature Dumpsters for recruiting letters from college football programs all over the country.

Jammed inside them were bright orange envelopes from Clemson, letters from Alabama, Boston College, UCLA, Oregon, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Northwestern, Virginia, Georgia Tech (just to name a few) -- all addressed to 17-year-old Kenny Tate -- and all of them unopened and ignored.

DeMatha's Tate Ready to Say 'Terps Football'

Two-time All-Met wide receiver Kenny Tate is expected to announce this afternoon that he will accept a scholarship to play football at the University of Maryland, sources familiar with the situation said yesterday.
The recruitment of Tate has been especially fierce, with the DeMatha High star narrowing his choices to Maryland and Illinois. Although Tate had DeMatha football coach Bill McGregor tell coaches from both schools that the player was not interested in any further recruiting pitches, assistant coaches from both schools were in attendance on Tuesday night to watch Tate play for DeMatha's basketball team.

I know people say we should like to see Big Ten 10 schools bring in good recruits, but I am happy Tate chose Maryland over Illinois...not only do we not have to worry about covering Tate, but Illinois is becoming a real thorn in our side, both on the field and in recruiting. I liked them a whole lot better when they werent taking Ohio kids that we offered away from us.

Spitefull bitter rant over - Tate has always seemed like more athlete than football player, but nonetheless, he is quite a catch for Maryland
