St. Francis lineman commits to Badgers
Score another one for Coach Bret Bielema and the Wisconsin Badgers. A big one.
St. Francis High School offensive tackle Josh Oglesby, considered to be one of the state's top two prep football recruits from the class of 2007, has made a verbal commitment to attend the University of Wisconsin.
Oglesby stands 6 feet 7 inches and weighs 320 pounds. He is considered a five-star recruit and has been ranked nationally among class of '07 offensive linemen.
As a junior last season, Oglesby led a St. Francis offensive line that helped the Mariners produce 2,987 yards rushing, an average of 299 yards per game, as St. Francis went 6-4.
"He really solidified his feelings for Wisconsin at their spring game" last Saturday, St. Francis coach Doug Sarver said. "All the best programs in the country were recruiting him and he had gone to some camps last summer and really made a name for himself."
Those camps were at Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and UW, Sarver said.
"The coaches that I've talked to feel he is a natural left tackle at the next level," Sarver said. "They say he is as good looking a kid as they've seen in many years."
Oglesby is the second commitment the Badgers have scored from the class of '07. The first was Middleton's Nick Toon, a receiver and the son of former UW great Al Toon.
I think that's very premature.
Reports are now that he has been committed to Wisconsin for a few months already, but kept it silent.
Just for the record, I think regardless of his grandmother's situation, Josh was going to Wisconsin. I don't mean to make light of that situation, and it was paramount, but if Josh had a desire to go elsewhere, he would have waited longer to commit. He committed over a year earlier than he had to. And he wouldn't have to move for over a year and a half. Nobody knows what him grandmother's status would have been then. The reality of it is, Josh grew up a Wisconsin fan, and this was his dream school. As a fellow Wisconsin fan, if I had the opportunity to go to Wisconsin on football schollie, as well as every other school, I wouldn't hesitate in choosing Wisconsin. Josh is just too nice of a guy to say no to other programs.
Prized recruit picks UW
St. Francis' Oglesby a superb offensive tackle

Madison - A little more than three years ago, the University of Wisconsin football staff went head-to-head on the recruiting front with Notre Dame and landed one of the top offensive line prospects in the nation.
That player, then-Brookfield Central High School senior Joe Thomas, has developed into an All-American left tackle and will be a senior at UW in the fall.
Late Thursday night, UW coach Bret Bielema learned that his first staff had scored a similar victory over the Irish.
Josh Oglesby, a 6-foot-8, 312-pound junior offensive tackle from St. Francis High School, has given an oral commitment for UW's 2007 freshman class. Oglesby chose UW over Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State and several other marquee programs.
"It was a very tough decision because of the schools that offered," Oglesby said by phone Friday afternoon. "They were all great coaches, great staffs. . . . But I just had to follow my heart.
"In talking to different coaches the one thing that was common was that they said when you find the place that is best you'll know it and you won't have to go through any more recruiting.
"I found that place."
Bielema cannot comment publicly on recruits until they sign a national letter of intent and Oglesby, who turns 17 on May 12, can't officially sign until February 2007.
However, St. Francis coach Doug Sarver made it clear that Bielema was elated to land Oglesby.
"I talked to Bret and he is very excited," Sarver said. "The kid's potential is unlimited. . . .
"All the best programs in the country were recruiting him and he had gone to some camps last summer and really made a name for himself."
Those camps were at Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and UW, according to Sarver.
"The coaches that I've talked to feel he is a natural left tackle at the next level," Sarver said. "They say he is as good looking a kid as they've seen in many years."
Oglesby last season anchored a line that helped the Mariners roll up 2,987 rushing yards, an average of 299 per game.
Sarver said he thought Oglesby would be a better college player because he would face players closer to his size. Playing against much smaller players at St. Francis, Oglesby rarely is able to use his power and leverage.
"With kids that are half his size," Sarver said, "they are diving at his feet a lot. When he does latch up with somebody, it's all over."
Oglesby made several unofficial visits to UW and last Saturday attended the annual spring game. After watching the game and visiting with UW officials, he realized that he wanted to play for the Badgers. He spoke to his parents and several other people whom he trusts once he returned home and decided to end the recruiting saga.
"After coming home and thinking about it and after realizing this is where I wanted to go," Oglesby said, "I didn't want to string along other programs. I don't want to waste their time."
Now Oglesby, who plans on majoring in communications at UW, can focus on his final year at St. Francis and prepare to follow in Thomas' footsteps.
"He is a really cool guy, a really down-to-earth person," Oglesby said of Thomas. "You'd never know he is as good as he is.
"All I can say is that I'm going to go in with the attitude that I'm new at this and I want to learn as much as I can right away.
"I feel my potential can be achieved at the University of Wisconsin."

Knee injury sidelines top UW football recruit Oglesby TCT
University of Wisconsin football recruit Josh Oglesby, a nationally-rated lineman from St. Francis High School, will miss the remainder of his senior season with a right knee injury, according to his prep coach, Doug Sarver.Oglesby sustained the injury in a Sept. 15 game against Greendale.
He will undergo surgery at a later date. Oglesby is expected to fully recover by spring and plans to take part in summer workouts with the Badgers, Sarver said.
