The Monitor McALLEN — In one year, Bradley Stephens finally can have his life back.
Stephens, McAllen Memorial’s nationally touted junior running back, will watch National Signing Day unfold today, but when Feb. 7, 2007, comes around, the pursuit to lure the hot recruit will finally come to an end.
"I plan to make my verbal commitment before school begins in August," said Stephens, who shattered Rio Grande Valley single season rushing records last season and likely will do the same to career marks during his senior campaign. "I’ve been told that’s the best thing to do, and that way I can put most of that stuff behind me.
"But, yeah, I know it won’t truly be over until I sign that piece of paper in February."Stephens (5-foot-11, 192 pounds) doesn’t have any favorites at this point, with football programs across the nation attempting to land the Valley standout.
Stephens receives about 20 mail items per day at school and home, ranging from personalized postcards from coaches, colorful notes from cheerleaders and posters and magazines from alumni. And even in the new revamped world of recruiting, text messages from eager college recruiters are among the daily norm for Stephens.
"The school secretary was joking with me one day," Memorial football coach Bill Littleton said. "I was getting my mail and she told me, ‘Coach, Bradley needs a bigger mailbox than you do. We’re running out of room.’
"And, you know, she was pretty much telling the truth. He gets just as much mail as I get."
Since football season has come to a close, recruiters have been working double time in pursuit of Stephens. Recruiters from Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Texas Christian, Army, Houston and Rice already have made to trips to see Stephens during the last several months. Georgia Tech is scheduled to visit, and Ohio State and Clemson recently have been hot on the phones.
In total, Stephens is being recruited in some form by nearly every college football powerhouse in the nation.
Texas A&M, Houston, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Georgia Tech are the only schools to offer Stephens a scholarship to date. With signing day on the horizon, the Yellow Jackets extended an offer to Stephens on Tuesday.
"I have about six big boxes full of letters and stuff," Stephens said. "It’s to the point where I can’t even read all of them anymore. If I tried to do that, I’d be up till about 1 every morning. To me, it’s just hard to believe that it’s getting close to my time to make a decision about college. It just seems like yesterday that I was starting as a freshman.
"But now it’s getting serious. It’s about time for me to make that big decision."

Question: I am very impressed with Stephens and think he will be something special but this doesn't seem to be the feeling everywhere. I thought he would be a lock for an offer but now it seems maybe not and I know it's early but I thought he would be talented enough to already have OSU, USC, ND,ect. offers. Am I missing something?

I'm not sure the staff wants another 5-9 180 lbs. back...
That is a valid point, but if we were to bring in Saine and Stephens, then by the time that Stephens would see the field he should be around 200 lbs.
Operative words being "should be"...
I guess I am just not as sold on Stephens being a Buckeye as everyone else is. His film is impressive and I am aware of his ties to OSU, but I think he may be the type of player that the staff wants to evaluate at camp, along with several other RB prospects who will be looking to be the seconds back offered in this class...players including Hughes, Williams, Simpson, Edmonds, Jones, Woolridge, etc. (not to mention RB/CBs like Gamble and Mabin).
