The Monitor McALLEN — In one year, Bradley Stephens finally can have his life back.

Stephens, McAllen Memorial’s nationally touted junior running back, will watch National Signing Day unfold today, but when Feb. 7, 2007, comes around, the pursuit to lure the hot recruit will finally come to an end.

"I plan to make my verbal commitment before school begins in August," said Stephens, who shattered Rio Grande Valley single season rushing records last season and likely will do the same to career marks during his senior campaign. "I’ve been told that’s the best thing to do, and that way I can put most of that stuff behind me.

"But, yeah, I know it won’t truly be over until I sign that piece of paper in February."Stephens (5-foot-11, 192 pounds) doesn’t have any favorites at this point, with football programs across the nation attempting to land the Valley standout.

Stephens receives about 20 mail items per day at school and home, ranging from personalized postcards from coaches, colorful notes from cheerleaders and posters and magazines from alumni. And even in the new revamped world of recruiting, text messages from eager college recruiters are among the daily norm for Stephens.

"The school secretary was joking with me one day," Memorial football coach Bill Littleton said. "I was getting my mail and she told me, ‘Coach, Bradley needs a bigger mailbox than you do. We’re running out of room.’

"And, you know, she was pretty much telling the truth. He gets just as much mail as I get."

Since football season has come to a close, recruiters have been working double time in pursuit of Stephens. Recruiters from Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Texas Christian, Army, Houston and Rice already have made to trips to see Stephens during the last several months. Georgia Tech is scheduled to visit, and Ohio State and Clemson recently have been hot on the phones.

In total, Stephens is being recruited in some form by nearly every college football powerhouse in the nation.

Texas A&M, Houston, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Georgia Tech are the only schools to offer Stephens a scholarship to date. With signing day on the horizon, the Yellow Jackets extended an offer to Stephens on Tuesday.

"I have about six big boxes full of letters and stuff," Stephens said. "It’s to the point where I can’t even read all of them anymore. If I tried to do that, I’d be up till about 1 every morning. To me, it’s just hard to believe that it’s getting close to my time to make a decision about college. It just seems like yesterday that I was starting as a freshman.

"But now it’s getting serious. It’s about time for me to make that big decision."

Rivals $

2/8/06

From the Iowa State site...ISU was the first to offer and that means something to Stephens. He also has offers from Texas A&M, Houston, Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech. He plans to commit before the start of his senior season.

Question: I am very impressed with Stephens and think he will be something special but this doesn't seem to be the feeling everywhere. I thought he would be a lock for an offer but now it seems maybe not and I know it's early but I thought he would be talented enough to already have OSU, USC, ND,ect. offers. Am I missing something?

Signing Day was a week ago...his offers will come, although maybe not from OSU, USC, ND, ect. Staff probably wants to see him at camp...

As Wad said it is early, but I am still perplexed that there isnt alot more interest. From watching his films and then seeing his track times I would of thought he would be top 2 or 3 back in the country. I guess I am missing something.

I know that I wouldnt mind a rb haul of Saine and Stephens. I think if he comes to camp that he would be a good bet to get an offer, if the staff wants to take more than one back.

That is a valid point, but if we were to bring in Saine and Stephens, then by the time that Stephens would see the field he should be around 200 lbs.

Operative words being "should be"...

I guess I am just not as sold on Stephens being a Buckeye as everyone else is. His film is impressive and I am aware of his ties to OSU, but I think he may be the type of player that the staff wants to evaluate at camp, along with several other RB prospects who will be looking to be the seconds back offered in this class...players including Hughes, Williams, Simpson, Edmonds, Jones, Woolridge, etc. (not to mention RB/CBs like Gamble and Mabin).

First let me say that I hope UT gets this guy. He's had a cult following on UT recruiting boards since he was a freshman.

However, like I mentioned on the first page of this thread, south Texas has a long tradition of producing what appear to be all-world, can't miss prospects at running back who never pan out. Rivals is aware of this and so is anyone who follows Texas (the state) recruiting closely, hence the reason why his ranking might seem low.

For all I know, Stephens breaks that trend. Until then, there will be many skeptics.

Yeah I think he will be a camp offer, but I am more suprised at the lack of interest from other teams. We have a plethra of guys to choose from, other don't all have that option.
