07 Recruiting (CBF40's look at our prospects)

I think this class has the potential to be amazing.
Unfortunately, it also has the chance to be a real dud - very few "leans" in the "big speed" and "power" categories right now. Blankenship is one guy, but the other top prospects - Oglesby, Martin, Barksdale, O'Dowd, Dailey, Hubbard, Hines, and Solomon Thomas could all end up elsewhere (and I wouldn't be shocked if we struck out on every player in that group, even though the odds probably say that we get someone). None of the second-tier players - Eric Thomas, D'Andrea, Wetterer, Schepis, Jeremiah, Claytor, O'Hara - has made a solid case for an offer to date. OSU should get plenty of "speed" players (due to the abundance in the state of Ohio, a lot of prominent names will not get offers, so don't be disappointed when it happens), but I'm worried about both lines, TE, and to some extent LB.

I don't see a QB getting an offer, unless he is a special player (none of the Ohio guys is special, so don't expect Belton, Smith, et al. to receive offers). Ohio State is a solid NC contender with a Heisman candidate at QB, so the Buckeyes and their suddenly explosive offense will get a ton of national media attention. If that's not good enough to get a top national QB to come to Columbus, then nothing will be. Look for the staff to target a few guys, and try to lock someone up by camp; if that's not possible, then they'll probably be satisfied with Boeckman, Schoenhoft, and Henton for 2007, and look for another guy for the class of 2008.

That being said, there's still plenty of time to go, and even one Oglesby or Martin could go a long way toward making 2007 a great class.

I agree on this point. Unless I'm missing something on Smith, he does not impress me as a top tier B10 QB. Then again, the kid is an obvious field general who has that competitive fire...kids like that find a way to succeed.

A question: What does the BP recruiting team think of CFB-40's original list? It's the slow time of the year, belly up to the bar and lay your opinions down.

I disagree with him on the RBs...I see Saine as a DB in college and Morgan Williams as the most impressive true RB in Ohio. I also think Toney Clemons is the best WR on the board...better than Thompson. Finally, the LB projections are a little off. Cooper is the smallest of the bunch and will likely play SS if he ends up at a major program...only way he sees LB is at a middle tier program like NCSU or SCarolina.

Other than those few points and CB40's trademark optimism, I thought it was a nice job.

Wow, I never thought of Saine as a db in college.

I think he is a top 10 back in the country.

I also think that Torrence or Gamble could be a running back too. There is a ton of athletes in Ohio so we should have trouble getting guys to fill the rb/dbs/s/wr.

Well Thompson is a stud. His videos were the best I have seen from a WR. As I said Clemons videos were very bad quality and very tough to watch.

I also think that Clifford could be the best of the 3 b4 all is said and done and Sukay is a very tough reciever too. We have some good prospects and hopefully we can nab a few.

Well I will agree with you on Cooper.

Also someone has to bring some optimism, and we don't even know who have the guys are that will be on our board at the end of recruiting season.

Opinions will vary of course, but Saine's running style is not for me...I like Morgan Williams much better.

I didn't think Clemons videos were too poor in quality to see a huge frame and an excellent burst from a WR who always catches with all hands and has excellent body control on the jump ball. Dwayne Jarrett clone to me.

Also someone has to bring some optimism, and we don't even know who have the guys are that will be on our board at the end of recruiting season.

Of course, it wasn't meant as a crack...

couldn't agree more about Saine, Williams and Clemons. Hosea Simpson is also a more impressive true RB than Saine, in my opinion. I like Sukay at WR a lot but I think he may end up on the defensive side of the ball.

I don't see either Torrence or Gamble ending up as a RB in college, but you may be right.

Thompson is a stud...no doubt. But I agree with 21 that Clemons is a more complete product at this point.

Excellent work on the list...

I agree with LJB, this class is really really thin on the offensive line prospects, and defensive tackle prospects.

The news ive heard on Barksdale hasnt been that good for OSU, and other than him, who else are we in on that is a defensive tackle? What if Oglesby and Blankenship go else where? We are in on a few great prospects, but below them the second option is really not that great.

Just curious who you would agree with?
Oliver and Evege, obviously.

I think that OSU leads for Blankenship.

I think that OSU leads for Saine, unless Michigan offers.

I think that OSU has a very good chance for Clemons, Sukay, and Hines (although none has an offer yet).

Torrence - 50/50, with baseball being the other option.

Clifford - 50/50, with Michigan being the other option.

Will Clifford and Torrence both get offered by Ohio State? They are very similar players, and other "speed" guys like Oliver, Evege, and Saine already have offers. And Brian Gamble and Sidney Glover are pretty good prospects, not to mention the OOS players.

Belton, Schepis, and Tucker won't get offers, and neither will Williams with a 2.3 GPA.

Oglesby, Barksdale, and Martin probably go elsewhere.

Solomon Thomas will go elsewhere (and might not get offered anyway).

So, best guess - Oliver, Evege, Blankenship, and Saine; maybe Clemons, Sukay, Hines, Torrence, and Clifford. That's nine reasonable possibilities, so it's safe to assume that the Bucks will get 6 or 7.

I have no inside info and maybe I am just a optimist but why do you think that Barksdale, Oglesby, and Martin will all go elsewhere. I could see all 3 going elsewhere but I don't think we miss on all 3. Not really arguing so much as to just curious. I agree on Belton and Shepsis, but I think if we miss out on either Dailey or Hines that we may go after Tucker. Also nothing solid on this but I think Pitt fans are pretty confident with Clemons(but in that case it was the same with Andy Miller). I would have to think both Torrence and Clifford get an offer. They are both top 100 players and too much talent to not get offered. I see what you are saying but we do have a need at corner and Torrence could fit that bill. We don't have a need at Safety but with Clifford's talent and his versatility at WR, I think you have to offer him(and aren't we supposed to soon?).
