Warriors' Simpson one of area's best
BY MIKE DYER | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Winton Woods senior Hosea Simpson has simple, if lofty, goals this season: rushing for 2,000 yards and earning billing as the leading rusher in the area.
"It's very realistic," Winton Woods coach Troy Everhart said.
Simpson, 18, was the Enquirer Division II player of the year last season when he rushed for 1,674 yards and scored 25 touchdowns.

There is still unfinished business for Simpson. The Warriors lost to Springboro 38-35 in a Division II first-round playoff game.
"Every day, that is our motive," Simpson said. "We were 1 yard short from winning a playoff game. We are focused on getting it done at the end."
Simpson is rated the No. 30 overall senior in Ohio and is No. 4 among running backs according to Ohio High magazine.
Duane Long, who rates players for the magazine and is in his 10th year as a Midwest football recruiting evaluator for Scout.com, said Simpson could be a Big Ten-caliber running back.
"He has instinctive vision and can burst," Long said. "... He can be running over top of people that are 250 pounds."
Simpson showed significant promise as a sophomore when he rushed 19 times for a single-game school-record 402 yards and five touchdowns in a 48-28 win over Harrison.
"Speed and power, period," Everhart said of Simpson's talent. "He is a guy who gets his own yards."
Mason coach Gary Popovich said that last season he noticed Simpson was getting "in the zone" on the sideline with his headphones on during a pregame ritual.
"He is a kid you want on your team," Popovich said. "...He was a very intense kid who you could tell always lived for Friday night. It was what he was all about. He wasn't just there to show up. You could tell by his demeanor and attitude that we better get ready to play."
Simpson (5 feet 9, 192 pounds) said he feels more explosive this season after work in the weight room. He has breakaway speed at 4.52 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
"My leg drive is more (powerful)," Simpson said.
But there has been one time in Simpson's life when he couldn't overpower his opponent. That came when he was on a boat fishing in Mississippi about two years ago.
After catching a 12-pound bass, Simpson said the fish broke his line near the boat.
"I learned you have to be real quiet and have patience," Simpson said of the experience.
Simpson, who still fishes a couple times a year, isn't quiet around his teammates.
Everhart said his leadership is evident.
"(Hosea) is a tremendous leader by example," Everhart said. "He doesn't take himself out of drills. In the huddle, he says he wants the ball."
