Caught in middle, Davis doesn't bend

NEW YORK -- If Anthony Davis wasn't caught in the middle before this year's Heisman High School All-Star breakfast, New Jersey's prized college football prospect certainly found himself there Monday at the New York Hilton.
Rutgers coach Greg Schiano was in the back of the room, one of the featured speakers for the event. Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, this year's Heisman Trophy winner, was at the lectern posing for photos.
In the crowd between them sat Davis, the standout offensive lineman from Piscataway whose college search is down to two choices: Rutgers and Ohio State.
"When I got here and saw Coach Schiano and Troy, it was definitely weird," Davis said with a laugh. "I'm right in the middle."
Which is exactly where Davis will spend the next few weeks, up until the senior makes his decision public Jan. 6 at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. That all-star game, to be broadcast live on Ch. 4, also will feature Don Bosco seniors Matt Simms and Justin Trattou.
Like he did with every other player, Smith gave Davis a hug, saying with a smile: "Nice to see you again." NCAA regulations prevent Schiano from discussing potential recruits, but this certainly provided yet another opportunity to bask in the glow of Rutgers' best season in quite some time, maybe ever.
"Our vision is becoming a reality and it's easier for people to believe," Schiano said afterward. "These are our kids. Some of them will come to Rutgers, some of them won't. But they're still our kids."
Whether Davis ever dons a Rutgers uniform remains to be seen, although the fact that the 6-foot-6, 335-pounder has the Scarlet Knights listed with No. 1 Ohio State as his final two programs is statement enough about how far they have come.
"I can't go wrong with either of them," Davis added. "I'm going to go with which one fits the best for me."
