'07 FL RB Chris Rainey (Florida Verbal)

i gotta kick out of this snippet:
Ask Charles Fishbein, a recruiting analyst who works for MSL Combines.com and helps colleges find the future stars of the game, and he says there's too much talent to keep count.

''The first player I'd pay to watch is Chris Rainey,'' Fishbein said. ``Look at what he did last week running for over 300 yards in the state semifinal win over an unbeaten Daytona Beach Mainland. [Fort Lauderdale] St. Thomas [Aquinas] knows very well what he can do in the open field. My favorite player, though, is [Northwestern receiver] Alderius Johnson.''

for florida's sake, let's hope that the merit of this spark does not ignite a flame. ohio state fans know especially well how something small can explode. a "full-scale" investigation of rainey is one thing. a "full-scale" investigation of lakeland, a program that is suiting up six commits to the gators and three more to other sec schools, is quite another.

'If Chris did it, then we may end up as a team having to forfeit all of the games Chris played in,'' Marshall said. ``I can't imagine any business here doing that and wanting to stay in business.

'No one will cross that business' threshold after this thing comes out. Lakeland is nothing like Miami. A business won't survive here that does that,'' he said.
I found this quote from the Herald article interesting...Seems the coach thinks extra benefits are SOP in some places, if so why aren't there more investigations going on?

I'm guessing since it happened in HS, he only has to give the stuff back to not affect his college eligibility. I keep hearing people citing Troy Smith as an example of how just giving stuff back is enough, is it true? That's not a flame, I honestly don't know about the TS situation, I didn't even know he was ever in trouble.

BTW, man, can anybody say anything more stupid than what Rainey said? I'm sure a lot of star HS athletes all over the country get "benefits", but bragging about it to a reporter and have it caught on tape is just plain retarded.

". . . .but bragging about it to a reporter and have it caught on tape is just plain retarded."

Listening to the interview one can tell that the player does not realize that he is doing anything wrong. He is thrilled that he is getting this kind of attention. Of course the reporter knows the score and eggs Rainey on.

Sanctions will and should be imposed. But it strikes me that Rainey stands on higher ground than those who secretly accept benefits. Hopefuly his honesty will save him.

What will most likely happen is that Rainey and others will be suspended for this weekend. They will have to give the items back and show proof of the returns. Then they won't jeopardize any status with the NCAA.
The same thing happened to LeBron his senior year... He took some jerseys for his autograph and the OHSAA made him ineligible. He was then reinstated once he showed proof of returning the items.
But there will likely be a close eye kept on the Lakeland program from now on...

High School rules are less rigid than the NCAA... The NCAA stipulates amounts of benefits and gifts ususally, which is why Troy was reinstated and was able to give the money back and serve his suspension.

Lakeland player cleared after investigation
BY JOSEPH GOODMAN
[email protected]

The Polk County School Board is allowing Chris Rainey to play Friday.

The Board cleared the embattled Lakeland running back Thursday after an internal investigation found ''no credible evidence'' to suspend Rainey for possibly violating rules of amateurism.

Ranked No. 1 nationally in some polls, Lakeland (14-0) plays St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday night at 7:30 at Dolphin Stadium in the Florida High School Athletic Association's Class 5A state championship football game.

Committed to the University of Florida, Rainey rushed for more than 300 yards and scored three touchdowns last week in the Dreadnaughts' semifinal win against Daytona Beach Mainland.

Rainey became the subject of a statewide controversy this week after allegedly accepting money as a local celebrity and trading his autograph for clothing and jewelry.

In a story published Tuesday by The Miami Herald this week, Rainey said of the cash, ``I didn't even count it. When I walk around, people are buying me food, giving me money. I'm like, damn, I'm glad I'm Chris Rainey. It's real nice to be me.''

The FHSAA, high school's governing body, launched a formal investigation Tuesday after The Miami Herald provided audio of the recorded interview on its website.

The FHSAA gave Lakeland 48 hours to conduct its own investigation. The Polk County School Board said Thursday in a press release that the "investigation was conducted independently from Lakeland High School personnel.''

The Polk County School Board said in its statement that "at this time, there is no credible evidence that Chris Rainey accepted remuneration, gifts, or donations for participation in football or any other sports at Lakeland High School. As such, there is no reason, at this time, to rule Chris Rainey ineligible to participate in the football program at Lakeland High School.''

The FHSAA will now take a lead role in the investigation.

Efforts to reach Lakeland principal Mark Thomas and Lakeland head football coach Bill Castle were unsuccessful Thursday afternoon.

Rod Smart, Rainey's brother and a former professional football player, said early Thursday morning that he believed Rainey lied about allegedly receiving gifts.

''That's [expletive],'' said Smart, a former Lakeland Dreadnaught. 'Chris was lying. Do they teach the kids to lie now too? And as far as the jewelry, [Rainey] doesn't even wear jewelry. I don't' even wear jewelry and I can afford it.''
