NEW ORLEANS (AP)?New Orleans coach Byron Scott, who led the Hornets to their first playoff appearance in four years this season, has been chosen as the NBA coach of the year, The Associated Press has learned.

A person with knowledge of the award spoke with the AP on condition of anonymity because the league had not yet announced it.

New Orleans sent a media advisory Monday afternoon, saying it planned a ?major announcement? at 10 a.m. Tuesday following the Hornets? gameday shootaround.

Turkoglu chosen NBA?s most improved player

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)?Hedo Turkoglu, whose 19 points, five rebounds and five assists per game helped the Orlando Magic win their first division title in 12 years, was selected as the NBA?s most improved player Monday.

Turkoglu?s numbers marked career highs in each category, and dramatic improvements from 13 points, four rebounds and three assists last season. He earned back-to-back Eastern Conference player of the week awards in late January and early February and was named player of the month for April.

This was the type of season the Magic always expected from the 6-foot-10 forward, now in his eighth year.

The only other guy for coach of the year would of been Doc Rivers, but he was given 3 superstars after last years horrible team...

Then his mother, Wanda Pratt, woke him up with the news that he had just joined mentor LeBron James plus Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Oscar Robertson and Wilt Chamberlain in a legendary legacy of rookie award winners.

No. Greg is able to get that next year. I can't remember who it was, but I'm thinking JJ, maybe it was Kidd...someone was either in the running, or won it, after being injured for most of their actual rookie year.

I have voiced my opinion on here before about this, but LBJ beats him about every statistical category, and Kobe has a much better supporting cast around him than LBJ does...

But they feel bad for Kobe because he hasn't won one yet...

LeBron wasn't even really in the discussion in the end, it was down to Chris Paul and Kobe Bryant.

Finally, Luke Walton was moved to raise his hand and ask what seemed like a fair question: ?Are you going to be getting your teammates any sort of gifts??
