'06 VA WR/CB Damon McDaniel (Florida State signee; transfer to Hampton)

I understand banking the 'ships, I really do. In fact, I like that about Tress. I would hate to take a bunch of players in one year, and then not be able to offer kids who want to be Buckeyes come the next year. Here is what i'm saying though, if your going to bank them...then bank them. If Tress knows he is going to bank them, then why even go after McDaniel? He came here on a visit,so there must be some interst there....right?
As I said, you go after McDaniel because he is a Top 100 player and top 5-10 WR nationally. If a player of that caliber shows interest in you, you go after him. He does have some interest in the Buckeyes (top 2) obviously. So you go after a top player until or if he commits, then you move on to next year. McDaniel is better than any other WR in the state next year, so you go after him. It is either McDaniel or bank for the scholarship...

That is a fair question, and OSU appears to have been open to several prospects. However, we just got Grant today. That may have been the final ship in this class and could have gone elsewhere if Grant had passed.

Even if we do have an opening, what is the staff's priority? Where I think we get off base is looking at the numbers and saying we have this many WRs or this many DL. But the truth is there are kids on ship who will never contribute and the staff knows who they are. They also know what kids are good candidates to be moved to other positions.

Speed, big speed and power. That is how JT counts 'em.

All that said, we have 4 ships left. One will go to a kicker, leaving three. Add 14 seniors and Ginn's early departure and you are looking at 18 for next year prior to any other attrition. Anybody recall the last time we didn't have some other sort of attrition?

My preference would be Peters or Matthews, just to rub a little salt in the Eugene wound.

WR is not a huge need at this time. Here's our WR breakdown:

SR - Hall
JR - Ginn, Gonzo, Jordan
SO - Dukes, Robiskie
RS/FR - Hartline
FR - Small

While we certainly could use a another top-notch WR in this class, it won't hurt us not to get one. Ginn, Gonzo, and Jordan will be seniors and Duke and Robiskie will be juniors when the WRs we take in the 2007 class are freshmen. We also have two WRs we've moved to the secondary (Lyons, Amos) as emergency backups at WR. We have plenty of WR depth for the next two seasons.

ginn is 99.9% gone according to a wealth of sources. I would not hold your breath on Jordan becoming healthy. I agree that we are deep at wideout however.

I think we should stay tuned on this one, but have the luxury of playing the lottery without any consequences. If we do not land him, we will be fine in terms of depth and can pick up some WRs in 07.

once again, how do we know how much the staff pursued McDaniel? Bowman visited and then the week he was supposed to decide, did not hear a word from the staff. Maybe after McDaniel and after evaluating some '07 talent, the staff decided they would rather bank the schollies. We don't really know...

Look, all I am trying to do is keep people from getting their hopes up and then having a complete meltdown (like some people are prone to do year in and year out) when this is a total shot in the dark. Look at it this way...if you don't think he is coming here, you won't be disappointed tomorrow when he chooses FSU or you will be hella-surprised when he picks OSU. It's win/win baby...

The target number for this class was 19, possibly 20; currently, there are 20 commitments, with no one wavering (apparently). Would the staff find room for a 21st player? Sure, if he's the right guy.

McDaniel would be the right guy.

Is McDaniel headed to Columbus? Maybe ... but don't read too much into the situations with other players who also happen to play the same position as McDaniel. Each recruit has a different "story", and those other "stories" (Lyons's, Johnson's, Chichester's, Mathews's, etc.) may have nothing to do with McDaniel's.

Also, don't buy into any rumors about McDaniel - just wait until 3 o'clock tomorrow.

GPA. Sorry I can't award one LJB.

Everybody disecting McDaniel's moves should just read this post and then relax until 3:00 tomorrow. It's that simple.

I'd list him as a sophmore though, so that extends the amount of depth we have for an extra year, no chance he doesn't get a medical redshirt.

Or it could extend the amount of time that a schollie will be tied up in a kid who may never be healthy enought to contribute. Numbers do not necessarily equal depth.

if banking ships was the motive at hand here, then why bother to offer gant? ohio is loaded with db talent next year, and osu is deep enough in 05 that it wasnt really a need?

there will be enough attrition that the 14 number wont be troubling come next recruiting season.

i'm not saying that mcdaniel is coming here, but telling a kid that there is no more room because JT wants to bank a few spots given who is already on board doesn't seem likely to me.
