'06 OH ATH Derrell Johnson (Iowa Signee)

Well from all accounts Derell is a smart kid and has a good head on his shoulders, he was just in a bad situation. Lets hope he can get his grades up and his test score up so he can get in here. It would be a shame if he went somewhere else b/c he really wants to be a buckeye and he is such a talent.

Great interview by Duane Long...Johnson makes it clear that he wants to play football at OSU. He is working hard to get his acadmics in order.

We're pulling for you Derrell!

I am rooting for this kid like no other left on the board. From what I have read he has really turned his life around since he has obtained a stable home environment. I just hope OSU admissions sees the potential and understands the story behind the numbers.

I am a little confused on the difference between gray-shirting and prep school, though I know the difference is grades, do you still go to a community college while gray-shirting? Looks like we have a real possibility of getting 3 WR's in this class and we have 2 safeties. Any chance we gray-shirt Johnson if he has the grades?

I think, if you grey-shirt but have the grades, you can do whatever you want (not go to school, pay your own way @ tOSU, go to CC to get cheap credits). If you grey-shirt to get grades, obviously that is different. My understanding of a grey-shirt is that it is a loose term to describe someone who has been offered a ship for a year other than the year they graduate, regardless of the reason for the delay (grades, no ships at that position - see Ryan Pretorious and I think Todd Boeckman). The grey-shirt does not affect eligibility like a red-shirt (i.e. you can grey-shirt, then red-shirt, then have 4 years), although there are definate restrictions as to what a grey-shirt can do team-wise.

if he gets his grades and enrolls for the summer, he may not be a grayshirt, rather a late addition to the '06 class, ala leandre boone

I understand he could and may do that, but I was thinking it may be wise to grey-shirt him if we can. Seems like a year of seperation from the incoming WR class would help him, especially if we get Matthews and/or Lyons.
