'06 MN DT Walker Ashley (Minny...no, maybe USC......no, PSU...no, Minnesota commit)

Didnt Conley say in his chat a few weeks back that tOSU has alot of silent verbals,
and that its done so that the kids can take all of their official visits?
Guess Pete's not the only "sleazy" one.
Two very different reasons for silent verbals.

1. To allow a player to enjoy taking 5 official visits.

2. To give a player the false impression that he will have fewer recruits in the same class and position to compete against.

comments about USC visit this weekend

Walker Ashley comments on game "USC blew em out. They played really good on defense and I thought the d-line played great. Coach Orgeron is really a coach who can get them going. I got in on my trip last night and Chilo Rachal was my host, tonight after the game Dominique Byrd will be my host and he's from my home state. It's been a great trip, USC is definitely my top choice by far."

He said before he went to USC this past weekend it was a tossup between tOSU and USC. But now USC is the clear leader. It sounds like if he gets the ok from his parents, he will be a Trojan. But his mom might be a tough hurdle, she wants him to stay closer to home. He still says he will visit tOSU and others.

I think the three game losing streak has an effect because most likely USC or some other school is using it against us. Eden Prairie always wins so another school may be telling Walker if he goes here he wont be wining games or the TOSU coaches wont help him get to the next level. I think if we finish the year strong and he has a good visit here we may have a chance. But Walker may have already know he wanted to go to USC so he could be using TOSU's struggles as his excuse for not coming here.

Tackle expected to commit soon

By Scott Wolf
Staff Writer

Walker Lee Ashley, a highly regarded defensive tackle from Eden Prairie, Minn., said Monday he expects to officially commit to USC in the next few days.
"I thought about it all day and I'm pretty happy with USC," Ashley said. "My parents are out of town and I'm just waiting for them to come home. I'll most likely make it official on Wednesday."

Ashley (6-foot-5, 285 pounds) spent last weekend at USC and attended the Washington game. He would be the Trojans' fifth commitment.

His father, Walker Ashley, played linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings when USC coach Pete Carroll was an assistant coach there.

"Hanging out with the players was cool. I could spend the next four years with them," Ashley said. "They're doing real well right now."

Ashley has been offered scholarships by Oklahoma, Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State. He said if he commits to USC, he probably won't take visits to other schools. USC already has two players from Minnesota -- tight ends Dominique Byrd and Nick Vanderboom.

Is that really a big deal? The kid wants to play defensive end in college. In addition to being built more like a DT, especially after a college strength program, we already have two DE in this class, with DE/TE Lawrence Wilson also a strong possibility.

Today's Minneapolis paper

Walker Ashley, the Eden Prairie defensive end who coach Mike Grant says is as good a football player as he has coached, had a good visit to Southern California recently, but contrary to what has appeared on one of the recruiting services on the Internet, Ashley didn't commit to the Trojans. "Ashley is 6-4, 290, he runs a 4.9 40 and he is good enough athlete so he could play running back or wide receiver for us," Grant said. Ashley, a son of former Vikings linebacker Walker Lee Ashley, is being recruited by Ohio State, Penn State, Oklahoma, USC and the Gophers. He likes the Gophers staff and will give them strong consideration, according to Grant.
