I think he'd be a heck of a safety prospect! Good speed, a sure tackler, brings the wood when need be, and has GREAT hands (both sides of the ball). And if scout's measurements are right, he's got great measurements too! (6'3"/215)

I liked watching his video, but I still think Marcus Sims is a better Florida prospect than McCarthy. I'd love bringing him on safety blitzes

I think McCarthy could either be a strong safety or OLB at the next level. He showed some good instincts when the ball was in the air. I thought he looked pretty good at TE as well.

Sorry didn't make myself clear there I meant Simms looks better at RB than at LB. But I think McCarthy has a good frame for a LB and with our weights program I think he could end up being a good size LB when it's time for him to play. I agree he looked good at TE and when he was put out at receiver.

Clearwater Central Catholic linebacker Colin McCarthy has impressed many over the summer with his rigorous efforts in various camps. Florida defensive coaches expect to have a clearer picture of his abilities in action next weekend.

"My coach (Mike Jalazo) said that Coach (Charlie) Strong is supposed to be here watching when we play (Tampa) Jesuit next weekend," McCarthy stated. "My coach will talk to him after the game. I hope to impress him. I'd like to get an offer from Florida. I really like them."

The three schools that have recruited McCarthy (6-3 215) the most in recent weeks have been Ohio State, Penn State, and Miami. He has offers from each of them. He told me last month that he hoped to have an offer in hand from Coach Urban Meyer and the Gators when he departed Florida's Friday Night Lights Camp in July. The offer never materialized.

McCarthy put up some tremendous numbers playing both ways for the Marauders as a junior. He totaled 163 tackles, four sacks, and five interceptions predominantly at linebacker but doubling as a safety in passing situations. McCarthy reads and reacts to the ball perhaps as well as any defender in The Sunshine State.

He's a good enough athlete that he never leaves the field. He made his mark on the offensive side of the ball when he caught 32 passes for 525 yards and eight touchdowns splitting time between tight end and wide receiver at CCC.

McCarthy turned plenty of heads with his times at the Scout combine in Tampa last spring. He ran a searing shuttle time of 4.31 seconds and a forty time of 4.6.

Florida coaches have taken note of his junior season and camp accomplishments. It would appear that the Florida coaches want see a little more before determining whether an offer is in order for McCarthy. That is not an altogether unusual practice. There is no doubt that CCC teammate and all-state athlete Riley Cooper is worth seeing in person as well.

Clearwater Central blasted 4A Stuart Martin County 20-3 Friday night in a game that was called due to lightning with just over six minutes remaining in the second quarter. McCarthy scored the game's first touchdown on a 15-yard reception from quarterback Andrew Nowels. Defensively, McCarthy made several stops where he displayed his quickness and speed to the ball. McCarthy told me last month that while he is not ready to make a decision at this time, he believed he was a perfect candidate for the program because of his work ethic. "They're (Florida) not going to go in there and slack around and get themselves off track," he said then. "They have the mindset of winning a national championship. With that said, the way the team and coaching staff is they shouldn't have anything less than perfection. I feel that football wise it's serious when you're preparing and playing. Whenever you're out there working out, you've got to give it everything you've got. Urban Meyer stresses that you to give 110 percent when you're out there … it doesn't matter if it's practice or a game. I think that I fit right in there."

Colin has an official visit set up for the Iowa game and will see the Buckeyes again on his official visit to PSU. He has 20-25 offers from schools such as Miami, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Indiana, West Virginia. Florida nor FSU have offered. Colin likes the tOSU depth chart after this year and is being recruited as a LB and a Safety.

He would be a huge safety but hopefully they put him at LB. I would really like to see Grant Schwartz as our safety in this class. Either way good deal he gets to see plenty of the bucks.

McCarthy and Cooper were tossed on the same play in the fourth quarter. After an incompletion, the seniors were disqualified when CCC was penalized 45 yards for three unsportsmanlike conduct calls.

Jalazo said Cooper was ejected for using profanity; McCarthy for being disrespectful to an official.

"We needed to have our composure much more than we did in the second half," Jalazo said. "Things got a little crazy. One of the officials told me he was trying to get the game back under control when our guys were ejected.

"But we think the length of the suspension is a little too much in Riley's case."

Looks like the right punishment for a momentary lapse of judgement.

Sky is definitely still overhead.
