'06 defensive tackles (general thread)

the big 10 actually is changing to somewhat more or a spread offense, but i also think its still looked upon as a power conference with wisconsin, minnesota, michigan, penn state, and ohio state leading the way

as for iowa the only reason why they were pass-happy last year is because they couldnt keep anyone running the football off of a stretcher
no offense, but i dont think i would mention wisconsin as one of the power teams. i cant see them contending this year and now with the loss of barry alvarez, i dont think recruiting is going to exactly pick up. i think for the next couple of years, they will be falling to the bottom of the conference.

Thats exactly what I was trying to say, also spread does not mean pass. Texas runs the spread more than almost any team in the country and was the second leading rushing team, with a power running game no less. Wisconsin runs a 1 back offense but that doesn't make them a run and shoot team.

i was pretty much jus repeating high_lonesome, as for wisconsin i also believe that they really are going to tail off but for the last few years they have been more of a smash mouth team than a passing team, they have a great bruising fb in matt bernstein and they can pound the ball if they want, but they will tail off for a few years to say the least

i dont understand why out of state DTs dont consider ohio state, we consistently play good if not great defense and could use a top rate run stuffer, i know we are in on a few this year and i would love to see us land phillip taylor, or someone cut in the same mold as a vince wilfork or a conditioned gabe watson, that would really help our defensive line occupy the offensive line and free our linebackers up, is there anyone else out there that we are in the hunt for?
If Ohio State "consistently play good if not great defense", why does it matter that out-of-state DT's do not consider the Buckeyes more often than they do? Your statement seems to indicate that the staff is doing just fine with the talent that they already have. Are you simply trying to be an alarmist?

we do consistently play great defense and i understand your post, but we have only taken two DT's in the last two years combined and that is a low number, im jus confused why they dont consider us, i dont see any apparent red flags that would hinder their interest in our program

and our staff is doing fine and i back them 100%, they obviously know more about this subject than i do (hopefully), its jus confusing why they arent interested in coming to columbus

heres some comparisons
in the last two years these programs have brought in this many DT's

Ohio state(2)
Oklahoma(5)
Texas(3)
Michigan(4)
Auburn(7)
Miami-FL(5)
LSU(4)
Tennessee(5)
Iowa(5)
Florida State(4)

I think that you are getting too hung up on how Rivals or Scout defines a player - for the purposes of their rankings, they like to confine a player to a single position, such as "strongside defensive end". Coaches (especially Tressel) don't look at players that way - in many cases, they will move kids around until they find a fit (WR Tony Gonzalez is still officially a cornerback according to Rivals' data base, and Devon Lyons is a safety). Also, many players grow out of one position and into another (say from tight end to tackle in the case of Kirk Barton). With that in mind, the Bucks have signed 7 defensive linemen over the past 2 seasons - Vernon Gholston, Nader Abdallah, Alex Barrow, Doug Worthington, Ryan Williams, Lawrence Wilson, and Todd Denlinger. Of those 7, Abdallah and Denlinger are "true" DT's; Wilson, Williams, and Gholston are "true" DE's; and Barrow and Worthington could play either DE or DT. Finally, in 2004, the Bucks signed Brandon Smith as an LB, but some speculate that he may eventually become a DT. That's a total of 5 players over the past 2 years who are or might be DT's at Ohio State. It seems like there are plenty of bodies to me.

those are some good points, however i would still love to see ohio state land a couple of "true" DT's this year, bulking up DE's is a good idea and all and it has worked and im not downplaying that, but its hard to argue about getting someone around 6'2" 310 that could really grow into a gap stuffer

JT recruits Speed, Big Speed, and Power. Those are his categories.

I am not anxious to have a bunch of Gabe Watson types if they are just going to stand around and ask who that #7 was that just ran past.

The top 5 DT prospects in the country this year all run a 4.9 or slower. The slowest of the top 5 DEs is 4.74.

i know that speed is most likely a higher priority to tressel and hey he knows what hes doing but the top high school defensive tackles in the nation last year were all over 300 lbs, and a well conditioned gabe watson and vince wilfork type would really help any defense free up the linebackers and occupy the o line men

i understand that there is nothing wrong w/ our line right now and that position changes are possible, i jus believe that a true DT would be a very nice addition to our team, and i dont understand y OOS players arent interested in become buckeyes, i know the sky isnt falling im jus saying that grabbing a few true DTs wouldnt hurt the team and i think it could really change it for the better

Having a big dude to stuff up the middle is fine, but I don't see the problem with playing 4 "quick" guys either. Darion Scott seemed to do just fine (and he came to school as an LB IIRC) Kenny Peterson came to OSU as a DE, IIRC, and he more than held his own down there.

Maybe Exhawg can shed some light on this, but it seems to me, in a game of leverage the "smaller" guy isn't at a particular disadvantage if he stays low and moves quick and keeps good balance etc... in other words, he knows great technique.

All that said, I sure wouldn't mind another 4 years of Tim Anderson.

thats exactly what im trying to say, our line is fine and im not saying that since we dont have any 320lb guys that we'r gonna lose every game this year, im jus saying that i wouldnt mind netting a couple true tackles this year

thats exactly what im trying to say, our line is fine and im not saying that since we dont have any 320lb guys that we'r gonna lose every game this year, leverage quite possibly is the most important in the trenches, but more size wouldnt hurt

im not sure but isnt iowa's 2 starting DT only 256 lbs? I think his name is Matt Kroul or something? wouldnt that be a definant disadvantage up front, I mean bobby carpenter is 255
