'06 defensive tackles (general thread)

scarletngrey11

All right, all right, all right.
defensive tackles...

does it bother anyone else that osu hasnt landed a big time DT for the last couple of years? we've brought in a total of two in the last two recruiting seasons and i know that some of our ends will grow into tackles but after this year our depth isnt all that great, id love to see osu land a couple of big time tackles this year but i dont see it happening again, does anyone else notice all of this?

I'm probably wrong... but I just assumed you go after defense ends.. and if they turn out to not be as quick or they really bulk up then you convert them to DT... similar to how I assume you go after OTs and then move them inside to OG...

but yes.. I have noticed as well...

I agree that we haven't brought in a whole lot of talented DTs for sometime. We did pull in Todd Denlinger last year. The overall number of talented DTs has been down nationally and it doesn't help that OSU does not have a huge presence recruiting nationally. I like the style of bringing in big quick ends that end up moving inside if they bulk up too much. Last year we inked an amazing group of ends.

we did sign 3 talented defensive ends last year but im not that sold on delinger, believe me im a die-hard buckeye fan and im optimistic but from what i heard about the big 33 game he didnt play as expected, i know the game isnt meant for lineman to get recognition but i thought he should of stuck out more, i think it would be a huge success to get a big DT someone like demarcus granger from last year, but i dont see it happening again this year. i know that we are in on one 340 plus guy this year, but is there anyone else of that caliber that we can realistically land?

this is the type of thing that florida state did in the early 90's, It can work in the "speed" confrences where offense seem to be a little more open, but the big 10 is and seemingly always will be a power confrence. You would think that you would try to get a prototypical run stopper.

(note: i am not saying the big 10 is slow or that florida is fast, just commenting on the overall style of play)

One thing that I love about mack is that he always makes sure we are stocked at DT and the flip side of that is they want to come to texas because of our rep with the nfl,

ex: Shawn Rodgers, Casy Hampton, Marcus Tubbs, Cory Redding,

It's a little early to be worried about Denlinger. He got hurt in the Ohio North/South All Star game and he didn't look like he was in great shape for the Big 33. As it was pointed out it's very difficult for a DT to look great in an all-star game for a number of reasons. Denlinger was athletic enough to play middle linebacker in high school so he has great feet. Some time in the weight room and time to adjust to a new position will be good for him. He'll be fine.

With Pitcock, Green, Patterson, Penton, Cotton, Abdallah and Schafer we should be just fine in the middle of the d-line this year. I'm more concerned about who's going to provide a consistent pass rush off the edge.

pitcock was signed in 02 so its been a few years, im really sold on nader abdallah i think he'll be a beast when he gets his oppurtunity, but other than him we havent really signed a prototypical run stuffer at DT, if you look at last years rival 100 list all the top tackles were in the 300 range.

5.Demarcus Granger- 6'2" 320
14.Callahan Bright 6'2" 315
18.Jerrell Powe 6"3 340
25.Roy Miller 6'2" 300
31.Kade Weston 6'5" 315
35.Marques Slocum 6'4" 330
42.Ndamukong Suh 6"4 300

and so on

now im not an ignorant fan wanting to stick a 500 pound player out there but you cant tell me you wouldnt want osu to sign someone of that size and caliber, and we'v only signed two in the last two years combined, and nader is the only one that i would put in that company

as for mack brown he does a great job of getting bigger tackles to play at texas, its important to have that skill in the middle of your defense, i wish they would flock to us instead of texas

High Lonesome the comment you make about the B10 always going to be a power conference is laughable. NW, Purdue, Iowa(no running game), MSU, Illinois(Kisan Flakes is a mobile QB), Indiana(under Hoepner the will go to a spread), and OSU(Tress says they are opening it up) are all the teams that will feature a spread or hybrid offense.

Now back to the topic. I think that Ohio produces so many top notch O-linemen it hurts the production of great DT. In Ohio rarely do you find a player that focuses on DT instead of OL. There are 10 on the 2-deep for the OL and 4 in the 2-deep for DT...DO THE MATH. These kids know its easier to get a scholly for OL than DT.

I am still shocked that Ohio cannot produce better DT's. Its a position that we are forced to recruit OOS. This is a very difficult position to be in. I think Coach Fickle will get us a stud or two this year. Don't panick but I understand your concern.

Can some of our OL prospects switch over, considering the remarkable depth we will have as Boone, Cordle, Ballard?, and possibly Smith & Brown...?

Somehow I doubt that OSU is overlooking this. We could be in good shape this year to bring in one or two.

Something I'd bring up is how bad our DL looked at the beginning of 2004... and how dominant it became later. Give denlinger and the rest some time and they will get it done.

i dont understand why out of state DTs dont consider ohio state, we consistently play good if not great defense and could use a top rate run stuffer, i know we are in on a few this year and i would love to see us land phillip taylor, or someone cut in the same mold as a vince wilfork or a conditioned gabe watson, that would really help our defensive line occupy the offensive line and free our linebackers up, is there anyone else out there that we are in the hunt for?

Well I guess I was looking more at the big 10 powers but here goes, Mich is the epitome of a prostyle offense, Wisc has a power zone running game, minn has one of the best running games in the nation, tOSU is traditionally a pro style offense and if Tressel had what he considered a feature back i am sure that you still would be(he is a smart enough coach to play to his strengths though), and Penn State is a prostyle team. Of the contenders only iowa and purdue are passing teams. Mich state ran a very balanced offense, the fact that much of it was out spread doesn not make them a passing team(see texas). so that leaves us with indiana (not a football school) NW (not a sports school), Illinois(not a football school) The teams that are the face of Big 10 football are powerfull, traditional and pysical teams. If you think that i am trying to promote the slow white boy confrence stereotype you are wrong, quite to the contrary. I was trying to portray the big ten as a dominating pysical confrence, Kind of the anti MAC.

the big 10 actually is changing to somewhat more or a spread offense, but i also think its still looked upon as a power conference with wisconsin, minnesota, michigan, penn state, and ohio state leading the way

as for iowa the only reason why they were pass-happy last year is because they couldnt keep anyone running the football off of a stretcher
