'06 CA RB Stafon Johnson (USC signee)

Thankfully Johnson had a spotter, unlike this former NFL great 4 years ago.

SignOnSanDiego.com > Sports -- Weightlifting accident kills ex-Steelers linebacker Little, 46

David Little, a durable linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers who was voted to the Pro Bowl in 1990, died while lifting weights at home in Miami. He was 46.
Little had heart disease, and a cardiac fluttering Thursday caused him to drop 250 pounds of weights onto his chest, the coroner said yesterday. The weights rolled onto his neck and suffocated him, the coroner said.

Pussies, and those who would like to lift heavy weight without the threat of being paralyzed or perhaps killed if the spotter is unable to respond adequately - like in this case.

IMO bench presses for training purposes have no business being done except with a Smith machine. They're not that expensive, and they enhance the effectiveness of the exercise. Not using them is just macho ignorance.

That's a pretty ignorant statement, I'm sure your chances of having a freakish accident like this are as good as winning powerball.

Macho ignorance? Not really, for athletes and body builders flat with a barbell builds your stabilizers and in turn size and strength. It's fine to use a smith as an exercise here and there, but not as your primary source of lifting.

It doesn't enhance effectiveness... it assists and causes you to use less muscle fibers... period.

In his thread in the recruiting forum...

only saw a "report from USC"...not an article and I figured most would be interested in this that read only in the College football area and not other team's recruiting. Sorry... mods move it if you would like.

Yep..Load up exactly what you are doing on a smith machine on a flat bench, and tell me how it feels in comparison..

"macho ignorance"..Sure..and when the combine rolls around tell the scouts to bring you out a smith machine to do reps of 225 with and see what they call you..

Regarding a spotter, there is only so much you can do to limit that brief time frame where you can't help much...I've seen forearms snap in half..bars slip through hands..That's like telling someone why didn't you catch ted ginn when he ran by you...

An update for you guys -- as of 9:30pm (PST) he is in surgery having his vocal chords reconstructed.

Everyone out here is just crushed by this news. He's apparently stable and it's not considered life-threatening anymore, but it's a very strong possibility that he won't be able to play football ever again, let alone the rest of this season. :(

Bummer.

At least it's not life threatening. Could've been much worse.

Yeah, it was a huge relief knowing he was going to be okay. Nobody knew much at first, just that the bar had come down on his throat and that he was coughing up blood and was undergoing emergency surgery. Finding out he was going to at least live.. man, what a scary time it was there.
