Big Ten's top award too close to call
By Tom Mulhern, Wisconsin State Journal Coming into this men?s basketball season, University of Wisconsin forward Alando Tucker was the leading candidate for player of the year in the Big Ten Conference, with Ohio State center Greg Oden nipping at his heels.
Tucker was the preseason pick for the award, which will be announced today, while Oden was named to the preseason All-Big Ten first team, despite being a freshman.
?With Greg Oden and Alando Tucker, I don?t think you can go wrong (with) either one,? Indiana men?s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson said Monday. ?You can make a valid argument for both.?
At first glance, the differences couldn?t be more striking: Tucker, who is listed at 6-foot-6, is a fifth-year senior who excels at the offensive end, scoring in just about every way imaginable and ranking second in the Big Ten with an average of 20.1 points per game.

Big Ten notebook: Player of the year a tough choice
By Steve Batterson

Alando Tucker or Greg Oden? Greg Oden or Alando Tucker?

Selecting a player of the year in the Big Ten is proving to be a challenging task for conference coaches as they fill out postseason award ballots.

?If one played on a ninth-place team and the other on a championship team, it would be difficult. It?s a hard one because both of them are awfully good,? Northwestern coach Bill Carmody said.

The two both bring plenty to the table.

What comprises the player of the year in Big Ten men?s basketball is in the eye of the beholder.

How the conference?s 11 head coaches and a panel of 22 media members define the award could determine if Wisconsin forward Alando Tucker or Ohio State center Greg Oden wins it today, or if they split the honor. The coaches and media vote separately. The 7-foot Oden is a cinch to be voted freshman of the year. The question is whether he will be the first freshman voted player of the year. It will depend on what the voters value.

Wisconsin?s Alando Tucker captured the conference?s highest honor as today he was named the Big Ten Player of the Year in voting by both the coaches and the media.
He is the second Badger in the last four years to earn the award as Devin Harris claimed Wisconsin?s first Player of the Year laurel in 2004. In Big Ten games only, Tucker ranked second in the conference in scoring (19.7 ppg.) and tied for eighth in rebounding (6.1 rpg). The senior forward led UW to a school-record 13 victories in the Big Ten, while also tallying a 17-game win streak earlier in the season, the longest in school history.

Matta Repeats as Big Ten Coach of the Year

Five Buckeyes earn recognition from league coaches, media

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State returned just one starter and four letterwinners from its 2006 Big Ten title team but has put together a record-breaking campaign in 2007 with a school-record tying 27 victories, including a 15-1 record in league play. After consecutive outright league titles, the Big Ten coaches and media selected Thad Matta as the league's coach of the year in 2006-07, his second in as many seasons. Matta now has four coach-of-the-year honors to his credit in three NCAA Division I conferences. He also has five league titles in his seven years as a head coach. Ohio State coaches have won the award seven times. Matta joins Randy Ayers as back-to-back honorees. Ayers did so in 1990 and 1991. Matta's three-year record of 73-21 (.777) gives him the most wins of the 12 previous Ohio State head coaches in program history over the first three years of their tenures. His three-year winning percentage is second only to legendary mentor Fred Taylor's .808 mean over his first three seasons (63-15 from 1959-62).

What's with the coaches? Conley not on first-team "All-Defensive Team". Didn't he lead the league in steals?

He did. Both for overall games and for just conference games.

Also, Oden wasn't a unanimous first-team selection by the coaches.

I'm happy for Tucker...I believe he deserves it with the work and dedication he's given over his college career :)

I'd be a little more apt to accept Tucker getting POY over Oden if Tucker hadn't fallen apart like a $30 suit the last three games of the season.

the confernce coaches awards i put the most stock in... especially in basektball, most of the teams play each other twice. these guys have each other scouted upside down, inside out, outside in, right side out, left side out...

the coaches choice have the only attraction to me at all...i could give a shit what the media thinks...

also yes i realize coaches have "favorties" and "bias" but these guys going into tourney play have the other 10 teams in the conference scouted to unbelieveable levels. to me its the most telling and only list i will look at without a single question.
