A look at some area players who are being recruited:
Northeast linebacker Demetri Stewart (6-3, 199) has claimed 77 official offers since Miami first offered back in January without even watching him play the position. In addition to the Hurricanes, Auburn, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Ohio State remain high on Stewart's list.
Another hot Broward prospect is Dillard linebacker Elijah Hodge. The 6-0, 200-pounder has received offers from Iowa (where brother Abdul stars), North Carolina State, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Rutgers. While Miami hasn't offered, many believe he would commit to the Hurricanes if they do.
Ely two-way lineman Ronnie Wilson (6-3, 330), who will graduate in January, has been offered scholarships by Florida, LSU, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Oklahoma. Miami remains in the hunt but haven't offered.
Ely tight end/defensive end Michael Holton (6-4, 220) has received offers from Indiana, Central Florida and Auburn. He also likes Clemson and Florida.
Plantation defensive lineman Jeffrey Owens (6-2, 280) has been impressive, and offers from Miami, FSU, Georgia, North Carolina State and Oklahoma show why he will be a major catch.
For five months, I have been saying that Deerfield linebacker Jarvis Hicks (6-1, 195) is looking hard at Florida. The Gators were on him early in spring with hopes of bringing him in to play safety. While Florida and Auburn are the only schools to offer, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Southern Cal and South Florida remain in the picture.
Boynton Beach linebacker Baxter Grisby (6-1, 220) has also enjoyed a busy fall with an offer from Pittsburgh, but interest is coming from Miami, Bowling Green and Minnesota as well.
Pahokee's nationally rated running back Antone Smith (5-8, 178), my top runner in the state, has also had to screen calls over the past few months so he can concentrate on his senior season.
Smith has offers from Miami, Florida, FSU, LSU, North Carolina State and Rutgers, where he was the star of the camp this past summer.
While most have felt that Glades Central receiver Jessie Hester Jr. would wind up at FSU, where his father was a standout, the 6-0, 163-pounder has not been offered a ride by the Seminoles, leaving Miami as the leader with Iowa, Georgia, North Carolina State and Maryland as the other schools who remain in the hunt.
Hester's teammate, Tommy Duhart (6-3, 255), is also a hot recruit with an offer from Notre Dame, and schools such as Florida, Miami, Pittsburgh, Nebraska, North Carolina and North Carolina keeping an eye out.
Another player who has been receiving plenty of attention is Jupiter defensive end Courtney Harris. The 6-3, 240-pounder has attracted the attention of Miami, Florida, FSU, Minnesota, Ohio State, Michigan, LSU and North Carolina State.
