Get ready, the next wave of blue-chippers is here.
More than 300 high school football juniors from across the country showed off their skills Sunday in the Nike-Rivals100.com football training camp at the University of Miami.
Players from 12 states, including Florida, Georgia, Texas, California, New Jersey, Louisiana and North Carolina attended the camp, run by StudentSports.com.
The camp, which is in its seventh year, has featured Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis and Oakland Raiders defensive back Phillip Buchanon, both of whom are UM alumni.
''There were probably a good 30 players here today that probably had drawn no interest from any college before today,'' said StudentSports president Andy Bark. ``By the end of the week, I guarantee you they all will get scholarship offers.''
Players' speeds were tested in the 40-yard dash and 20-yard shuttle run. Vertical leaps were tested as well as strength by the number of bench press repetitions with a weight of 185 pounds.
Naples linebacker Spencer Adkins earned the best overall rating. Adkins ran 40 yards in 4.59 seconds, finished the shuttle in 4.31, benched 35 repetitions and jumped 35.2 inches.
Other top finishers were Plantation offensive tackle Jeff Owens (bench press, 36 repetitions), Pahokee running back Antone Smith (40-yard dash, 4.29 seconds), Melbourne Palm Bay linebacker Neefy Moffet (vertical leap, 39 inches) and Daytona Beach Maitland defensive back Avery Atkins (shuttle, 3.90 seconds).
