'05 PA FB/RB Ed "Horse" Collington (West Virginia signee)

Ed Collington, the WPIAL's rushing leader coming in, rambled for 208 yards on only nine carries and scored four touchdowns, as the visiting Indians breezed to a Quad East Conference victory.

Collington scored on runs of 27, 80, 14 and 39 yards for Penn Hills (6-1, 4-1), which is No. 3 in the WPIAL and No. 5 in the PIAA.

Collington has 1,446 yards rushing this season.

I almost didn't believe that when I read it but then I saw it again from another site. This kid sounds like he is a the real deal...

MUSCLED UP:@ Penn Hills running back Ed Collington separated his shoulder last year and was given two choices by doctors: Undergo surgery or strengthen the muscles around the shoulder so it wouldn't pop out.

After deciding not to have surgery, he has developed into one of the best backs in the state.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound senior has rushed 175 times for 1,674 yards and scored 22 touchdowns. He is one of the main reasons Penn Hills (9-1) is in the District 7, Class AAAA quarterfinals.

"I've never seen a player who was more dedicated to lifting weights," Penn Hills coach Neil Gordon said. "And that helped us as a team because the younger guys saw him in there doing the work and they fell in line."

Collington averages more than nine yards a carry and has accumulated his total in about five games of playing time. He missed last week's 27-0 victory against Shaler because of an ankle injury. He did not play in the second half against Plum, Connellsville, Hempfield, Penn-Trafford, Norwin or Baldwin.

"If we would have been in more close games or just given him the football most of the time, there's no telling how many yards he would have," Gordon said.

Penn Hills also has a gifted receiver in David Harvey, who has 29 catches for 502 yards, and has made sure he gets the football a few times each game.

Iowa has offered Collington a scholarship. West Virginia, North Carolina State, Michigan and Ohio State are interested.

"We used to think he was a Division I strong safety, but that was before he hurt his shoulder," Gordon said. "Every one wants him as a running back and that's because he has that combination of power and speed."

I wonder what Jason Gwaltney thinks about this. I know he's not afraid of competition but competing for the starting job at WVU is not in the same ball park in reward as tOSU.
Gwaltney is likely going to USC, so I don't think he cares much. Chances are, Gwaltney decommitting from WVU had an impact on Collington's decision.

One recruiting service doesn’t recognize the commitment and lists five schools — WVU, Central Florida, Michigan, Ohio State and USC — as possibilities for the back.

“I’m still committed to West Virginia,’’ Gwaltney said when reached Friday. “I went to Ohio State and USC. I’ll visit West Virginia in January.’’

He said he also visited Central Florida last week.

So, Gwaltney was asked again, the commitment is firm?

“Unless I see something otherwise,’’ he replied. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

According to Gwaltney he hadn't officially "decommitted" yet. I would tend to agree that he may still go to USC but as of now he has still verballed to WVU.

Recruiting: West Virginia corrals Penn Hills standout
Thursday, December 16, 2004

By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The "Horse" has decided he'd like to gallop in West Virginia University's backfield.

Penn Hills High School's Ed "Horse" Collington, one of the top running backs in the WPIAL this past season, made a verbal commitment to West Virginia while visiting the school Saturday.

"I didn't think I was going to commit when I went down there," Collington said. "They didn't pressure me into doing anything. But I just really liked the atmosphere and everything down there, so I just decided to commit."

Collington's other scholarship offer was from Akron. Collington still must score high enough on the SAT to be eligible as a freshman. But he believes he could see playing time with the Mountaineers early in his career.

"The coaches told me what I need to do to get playing time and I think I can," Collington said. "I just have to go down there and work as hard as I can."

Collington (6 feet, 205 pounds) was the second-leading rusher in the WPIAL during the regular season. He played sparingly in the playoffs because of an injured ankle, but still finished with 1,700 yards on 183 carries and was a member of the Post-Gazette Fabulous 22. He rushed for 2,975 yards on 354 attempts in his career.

"Everyone can improve, but I don't think there are any real weaknesses in Ed's game," Penn Hills coach Neil Gordon said. "He has good speed, he's powerful enough to run over people and he has good hands out of the backfield. I'm an Ed Collington fan."

David Harvey, another Penn Hills player, also had been offered a scholarship by West Virginia, but Harvey most likely will go to a prep school or junior college because of low grades.

West Virginia also offered Central Catholic running back Eugene Jarvis a scholarship last summer, but the Mountaineers apparently have cooled on Jarvis and aren't recruiting him any longer.

Penn Hill's Collington chooses WVU

By Kevin Gorman
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, December 16, 2004

The Penn Hills power back fits in with the Mountaineers' offensive scheme.
Ed Collington ran over, around and away from defenses to earn a reputation as the premier power back in the WPIAL this season.

Next fall, the Penn Hills tailback will take his roughshod running style to West Virginia after making a verbal commitment to the Mountaineers during an official visit to the Morgantown campus over the weekend.

Collington chose WVU over Akron and Kent State.

"Everybody was down-to-earth and up front with me," Collington said. "I liked the atmosphere. It felt like home. I was very comfortable with the players and coaches."

Collington said he was particularly impressed with the enthusiasm of West Virginia strength coach Mike Barwis, and is looking forward to working with him.

"He has so much energy," Collington said. "The players said he gets the job done. He said by the time the season starts, I'll be bigger, stronger and faster."

The 6-foot, 205-pound Collington rushed for 1,700 yards and 22 touchdowns on 183 carries this season, including five 200-yard games and three four-touchdown games. He finished with 2,975 career rushing yards.

Most impressively, Collington ran for 238 yards and two touchdowns, including a 72-yarder on the opening play, against a Central Catholic defense that shut down one great running back after another in the PIAA playoffs.

"(West Virginia) told me they liked that I am a hard runner," Collington said. "I can get the extra yards or break into the open field. I have breakaway speed. I can run you over if I have to or run away from you if I have to."

Is this someone worth pursuing at this point, considering Gwaltney reaffirming his commitment to WVU?

He was extremely high on us before, but we put him on the back burner while we were waiting on other guys. Is it possible that we both could be looking for a Plan B?

Just a thought
