The "Horse" has decided he'd like to gallop in West Virginia University's backfield.
Penn Hills High School's Ed "Horse" Collington, one of the top running backs in the WPIAL this past season, made a verbal commitment to West Virginia while visiting the school Saturday.
"I didn't think I was going to commit when I went down there," Collington said. "They didn't pressure me into doing anything. But I just really liked the atmosphere and everything down there, so I just decided to commit."
Collington's other scholarship offer was from Akron. Collington still must score high enough on the SAT to be eligible as a freshman. But he believes he could see playing time with the Mountaineers early in his career.
"The coaches told me what I need to do to get playing time and I think I can," Collington said. "I just have to go down there and work as hard as I can."
Collington (6 feet, 205 pounds) was the second-leading rusher in the WPIAL during the regular season. He played sparingly in the playoffs because of an injured ankle, but still finished with 1,700 yards on 183 carries and was a member of the Post-Gazette Fabulous 22. He rushed for 2,975 yards on 354 attempts in his career.
"Everyone can improve, but I don't think there are any real weaknesses in Ed's game," Penn Hills coach Neil Gordon said. "He has good speed, he's powerful enough to run over people and he has good hands out of the backfield. I'm an Ed Collington fan."
David Harvey, another Penn Hills player, also had been offered a scholarship by West Virginia, but Harvey most likely will go to a prep school or junior college because of low grades.
West Virginia also offered Central Catholic running back Eugene Jarvis a scholarship last summer, but the Mountaineers apparently have cooled on Jarvis and aren't recruiting him any longer.
