'05 OH WR Greg Orton (Purdue signee)

Hell, the kid is tall (6'4"), blazingly fast (4.4 speed), is from Ohio, and is considered one of the very best in the state...what is the staff waiting for?

I would not say Orton is blazingly fast. Rivals lists him at 4.49. If you watch his video he doesn't have that burst where he can just blow by people after he makes the catch. He's a nice looking athlete though and you have to like his size. He didn't help himself by not camping here this summer so he's just going to have to wait for a while. Maybe as time wears on he's losing patience. I suspect if Amos goes elsewhere and we don't get Lymon, which could very well happen, the staff will go back to Orton.

And you very well may have, I'm not doubting you for a minute. You know the discepancies these recruiting services have. Rivals lists him at 4.49. If you could see his video you'd see he doesn't run a 4.4 flat. Don't get me wrong, I like Orton. I don't usually get caught up in 40 times either. The only thing I saw on film that could possibly be held against him is his speed. There has to be some reason the staff offered Manningham, Hartline, Amos, and Lymon but not Orton to this point, right? Orton has plenty of size and good hands. He just didn't have that extra gear, and I'm not saying he needs one. I'm not sure what kind of blocker he is and I'm not sure if he runs good routes since I haven't seen him in person. There is something the coaches still have questions about. Hopefully Orton can answers those questions this fall.

I agree Nutty. The staff is loading up on speed and IMO if you don't have it your not getting an offer. IMO Lymon and Amos are our prime targets and until they commit I don't see Orton getting an offer. IMO Robiskie is higher on the pecking order than Orton is as well.

I just saw where he's listed at 4.4, it's Buckskin86's initial post in the thread (so it's his fault! ).

It's just a shame that he doesn't rate an offer in the staff's eyes yet. Hopefully he can get his speed down somewhat to go along with his other talents.

Sometimes it's about more than who is the fastest. I think it can be just as hard to find 6'4" receivers who don't mind going over the middle. Add 4.4 or 4.49 speed to that and IMO you have a potential winner here.

Excellent analysis, Nutty (as usual). I might add that Orton's 40 time, as listed by Rivals, was not a Nike time; Nike times are usual more accurate (and almost always slower) than other reported times.

Even if Orton does have sub 4.5 speed, I agree with Nutty that he doesn't play that fast. That being said, he does have an outstanding ability to position his body to ward off defenders, to fight for the ball in traffic, and make the tough catches. He'll be a good player in college, IMO.

Can someone please help me out I have heard this kid is 5'10, 6'2.5 and 6'4.
I think it was listed on the Nike camp that he was the 6'2.5.

Most sites/articles list him at 6' 4" but he measured at 6' 2.4" at the AA combine in January - Although he could have grown since then.

Here is a pic of him standing next to Marcus Freeman from Feb. (he has a few inches on Marcus)

he ran from 4.82 to 4.9 (electronically timed) at the AA combine - this was the middle of the pack of WR's/TE's

The AA ratings are NFL standard ratings and they are always much higher than you will see from other camps- where Greg is generally being rated at a 4.5 40.

The 2004 U.S. Army National Combine Presented by Reebok took place on January 1st and 2nd 2004 in San Antonio, TX at the Alamodome. 300 of the nation's underclassmen gathered to battle it out to see who is the country's top underclassman athlete as well as who were the top players at each position. The battles were fierce as athletes from 34 different states arrived at the Alamodome to compete in football specific drills and tests of speed and strength. Scout Camp an organization who runs combines for the NFL was on hand to measure and test the athletes. Garrett Shea, Football Director at SportsLink stated, "The U.S. Army National Combine is unique in the sense that it provides athletes with test results that are comparable to those of NFL standards. Unlike any other combine in the country the athletes who are in attendance can compare their times and results to any NFL athlete who attends the NFL Combine in Indianapolis for the most accurate comparison. I have attended a lot of combines where the athletes are tested and the results they are given are inflated. The quality of the testing results at the U.S. Army National Combine are held to the same standard as the NFL combine. From a recruiting perspective a college coach can not ask for a better combine to evaluate an athlete's true ability." For The U.S. Army National Combine Results click on the positions above. Orton commits to Purdue

Another Orton for Purdue

September 24, 2004

Greg Orton, a 6-3, 190-pound wide receiver from Wayne High School in Huber Heights, Ohio, made an oral commitment to play for Purdue.

He is not related to Purdue senior quarterback Kyle Orton, who completes his eligibility at the end of this season.

Orton has caught 26 passes for 340 yards through four games this season and ranks as the 48th-best receiver prospect in the nation by Rivals.com.

Orton is the sixth member of the 2005 recruiting class to make an oral commitment to Purdue and the first from outside Indiana.

A friend and foe convinced Wayne High School's Greg Orton to make a verbal commitment to Purdue's football team.

The friend and foe are one in the same — former Trotwood-Madison football and track standout Zach Logan.

Orton, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound receiver, recently chose Purdue over Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan State and others. National signing day is in February.

"It's the place I felt most comfortable," Orton said. "It's a family-like atmosphere and I like the coaches."

Logan, a freshman defensive back and former Ohio 400-meter dash state champion, helped get his old track rival on board.

"He played a good part," Orton said. "He was my host when I took my official visit. He showed me the campus and I got to meet his teammates. Zach thought I had a good chance to play early."

Through Wayne's 4-1 start, Orton has 441 yards and two touchdowns on 32 receptions and twice scored on running plays. Despite facing double-teams and bracket coverage, Orton leads the area in catches. Last season, Orton had 712 yards and nine TDs on 53 catches.

A three-sport athlete, Orton once thought the NBA was his ticket. Now, he hopes to showcase his receiving skills with a Big Ten team known for throwing. "It's everybody's dream to play in the NFL," he said.

Maybe the sprinters can get back on the track next season and settle the question: Who's faster?

"I don't know," Orton said. "Zach got me in the 400 but I could get him in the 200."
