'05 OH WR Greg Orton (Purdue signee)

Just ran across this as I was looking for news links. I didn't see any other mention of it. Sounds like Orton is NOT a prospect for Ohio State.

Ohio Wide Recevier - Greg Orton
By Chris Pool**Midwest Recruiting Analyst
Date: Jul 20, 2004

Huber Heights (Wayne) receiver Greg Orton is the #48 prospect in the Midwest. Orton has several scholarship offers and seven schools are at the top of his wish list.

Greg Orton, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound wide receiver from Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne has been offered several scholarships. Orton caught 59 balls for 782 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior.

Does Orton have a leader for his services? “I’m completely wide open right now,” Orton said. “My favorites are Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Iowa and Virginia.

“Notre Dame and Tennessee haven’t offered me a scholarship yet but they write hand-written letters all the time.”

Orton is a solid football player but don’t look for him to stay in the Buckeye State to play his college football.

“I’m definitely leaving the state,” said Orton. “I never grew up a big Ohio State fan like most of the guys in Ohio. I want to get away from home and experience something different.”

Greg Orton will be a four-year varsity member and three-year starter in 2004. He was named all-area as a junior and was named to the Ohio pre-season Tremendous 26 team.

Orton camped at Pitt this summer. He carries a 3.1 GPA in the classroom and scored a 21 on his ACT.

I think that "sour grapes" may be pretty close to the mark...

Bill Kurelic on Greg Orton (9/19/03)

"I went to the Ohio State-North Carolia State game," wide receiver Greg Orton said. "It was nice."

"I liked the atmosphere. The atmosphere was real nice. The game was great."

"Last year I went to the Ohio State-Texas Tech game."

"I do like Ohio State. I like Michigan State. That's all right now. And Tennessee."
Rivals on Greg Orton (6/30/04)

The 6-4, 190-pounder has gotten "about 18" offers from schools ranging from Michigan State to Iowa to Pittsburgh to Wisconsin and to Boston College.

But he'd like for Ohio State to come through with one. The Buckeyes haven't thus far, but Orton is remaining patient.

"I've been there unofficially for games and things like that," Orton told BuckeyeSports.com. "The atmosphere is something else. It's one of the best in the nation."

* * *

He currently favors Ohio State and Michigan State...
Insiders on Greg Orton (6/8/04)

"I like both programs, but Ohio State just has not shown as much interest as the others to this point. I've gotten a few hand-written letters and such, but not much else. Michigan has shown a lot of interest, but I haven't been offered yet. I'm just showing loyalty to the schools that have been with me since the beginning."
In any event, I think that Greg is a very good talent, and I'd really like to see him get an offer. With Amos leaning to Purdue or Michigan; with Robiskie thinking seriously about Miami; and with Lymon being somewhat of a long shot; I hope that Greg holds out for an OSU offer, as one might be forthcoming.

I saw Orton play last year in a locally televised game against Centerville. He was, in a word, AWESOME! He had had a pretty good game through 3+ quarters. When C'ville scored with less than 2 minutes remaining, it looked like Wayne might be done. Especially since their starting QB was out and they had turned to a soph. Wayne got the ball around their 15 yard line and went to work. IIRC Orton had 4 or 5 catches on that drive (Marcus Freeman also had one out of the backfield) including a game winning TD with about 15 seconds to go. He appeared fearless over the middle, showed great hands and used his body well to shield the ball from the defender. IMO, if we are not looking at him, we might be missing one. Besides, Wayne has been pretty good to us so far (Will Allen, John Hollins, Freeman). Let's keep the pipeline going.

Another player in that game that was impressive was FB Tommy Tamaska from C'ville. He is smallish (5'11"), but strong and has good hands (remind anyone of Matt Keller?). I have seen C'ville play at least once every year for as long as I can remember. I am a Kettering Fairmont grad and always go to this version of a rivalry game. Over the years it has seemed like the OSU\scUM rivalry when we had Cooper. Obviously, the best player in recent years in the game has been AJ Hawk. Well, Tamaska reminds me of a smaller version of Hawk. He brings it. In the Fairmont game last year, he broke the Firebirds' backs with about a 90 yard run with a botched punt. The Elks were up 14-0 in the first after forcing 2 turnovers and a punt. Fairmont's D finally stopped them on the third possession and forced a punt. Like AJ, Tamaska is Centerville's punter. The snap went over his head and it looked like Faimont would get the ball in great shape to make a game of it. Tamaska picked it up, reversed field and was gone (albeit with help from a missed holding call, but I don't want to sound like sour grapes). The defense came off the field and you could tell it was "Game Over". Unfortunately, I cannot find any recruiting info about him anywhere. He is a senior this year.

If he isn't an tOSU fan and wants to get away from home, why would tOSU offer him?

Check some posts earlier in this thread...I think the phrase "sour grapes" applies here. I would bet that if Ohio State offered, he'd either commit quickly or at least be thinking as such real hard.

My son in law was invited to the Michigan camp out of HS but couldn't go becuase his Mom made him go on a family vacation. That turned out to be his best shot to get noticed and he ended up at a small Georgia school where chronic injuries finally caught up with him.

Sometimes it is the little things.
