'05 FL RB Conredge Collins (Pitt signee)

Anderson Russell may be the other RB Tucker was talking about.

Wells and Russell/Lenix...not sure if we get Gwaltney
I didn't read the article. Did Tucker say that OSU had two running backs or did he say that OSU had their needs met for running back this year? I am surprised that they backed off Collins, unless grades were an issue.

We are pretty sure we've got what we need.
If I could add one phrase to the Snyder quote to clarify his meaning, I think it would be "Between who we've got on the roster now and who we think we'll sign ...We are pretty sure we've got what we need." Look at who they've got:

Big backs:

Anderson Russell is slightly taller and about the same weight and speed as Collins. His coach calls him a "punishing running back who can run through you or around you."

Erik Haw is 2 inches taller, only slightly lighter and runs a flabbergasting 4.27 forty. And he's already in school -- no academic concerns about qualifying.

Dionte Johnson has great pedigree and showed flashes this past season.

Speed backs:

Everyone assumes that Maurice Wells will be (or already is) a Buckeye. He is a high school superstar and all of Buckeye Nation expects huge things from him immediately.

Antonio Pittman proved to be a servicable back and labored most of the season behind a line that hadn't jelled yet. He projects to be much stronger next year behind a much-improved O-line.

Oh yeah, then there's that Ginn kid. Whether he lines up in shot-Ginn or gets the ball in the backfield as a flanker, he is a running threat par excellence. It really doesn't matter how he gets the ball in his hands, as long as he touches it a lot.

So, considering who's already on the roster and the virtual certainty that Wells joins the crew, I think Snyder's comment makes a lot of sense.

I don't think Russell has ever mentioned being recruited by OSU as a tailback. Lenix has, to a degree, but that probably won't be where the coaches prefer to play him.

Surely something has changed between a week or two ago when OSU was still intent on taking two backs and was still pursuing Collins, to today where Collins is no longer being considered. I don't see where Russell is the missing link in the chain. In my opinion, either they're considering Lenix as a tailback at this point and think he can bulk up quickly, or they have another back in the fold that nobody knows about in addition to Wells.

Maybe Gwaltney is beating Pete at his own game by committing to OSU and still entertaining USC (wishful thinking).

Could be?

I don't like the way the coaches have handled this situation along with others. Obviously there is info I'm not privy to, but I starting to wonder if OSU is getting a bad reputation for pulling away offers.

then FSU and maybe Miami are in the same boat as they pulled offers...something is up because the recruit can never tell as it could effect his opportunities and the schools can't say as there is privacy involved...it all points to grades.

IIRC, a recruit must get his transcript to a school before he can take an official visit there. I wonder if Collins finally got around to doing that and when FSU and OSU saw the actual transcript, they quickly concluded there is no way on this kid. I believe he has not visited UF or Miami yet and I am not sure about NC ST.

good point. Collins was probably avoiding the whole transcript thang. Maybe Fork Union will give him an offer?

If his grades are that bad, FUMA or an equivalent may be his only choice. BTW, I reviewed the NCAA bylaws and confirmed my post. To take an official (paid) visit you must have setn a transcript to the school you are visiting as well as proof you have taken either the ACT or SAT (you don't have to have your score, though).

your theory is all well and good, but the fact is that any borderline academic recruit this year was told their status regarding academics by osu well in advance. lenix and ringer both knew their offers were conditional upon academics. why would snyder lieto the kid and tell him their rb spots were filled when they had concerns over his academics? that's the part of the theory that needs to be addressed.

So many good theories

Alan...How confident are you that..MORE

Snyder did, in fact, state to Collins that OSU has filled their RB needs?
Isn't it possible that Collins , understandably, is putting his own "spin" on
the reason for a pulled offer?

who says snyder is lying?
Certainly not me, but who is saying that Collins isn't totally accurate? Afterall, Collins is stating what HE says Snyder told him. I do not intend to call anyone a liar in this matter and have no factual basis to do so. By the same token, there is a natural inclination question this situation. Assuming Snyder said what Collins says he did, there are 3 possibilities that most of us would wonder about.

1. OSU has two running backs in the fold. One is presumed to be Wells and the other is either on the roster or has already committed. If this the true situation, I must admit I am disappointed in the staff's unwillingness or inability to address the RB position adequately.

2. Same as the above, but the second back is, as of yet, uncommitted. Those who think OSU has a shot at Gwaltney would lean toward this one.

3. OSU still would like another RB in this class, but Collins isn't it either because of ability or grades. I acknowledge that this alternative implies that Snyder wasn't straight with Collins, which also would be disappointing and also somewhat atypical of how the staff has handled claimed or real academic casualties in the past.

All this assumes Collins' version of the conversation is accurate. It may not be.
