NILES, Ohio -- The Ohio State baseball team finished off midweek action with a 7-0 shutout win over Youngstown State Tuesday night at Eastwood Field. With the victory the Buckeyes conclude their midweek games with a perfect 12-0 record and a 6-0 mark vs. in-state schools. Ohio State improves to 35-15 overall, while the Penguins dropped to 16-30 in 2015.

"The main battle cry today was to finish up our midweeks and get another win against an in-state rival," head coach Greg Beals said. "John Havird did a great job tonight in a situation where he wasn't prepared to come in like that after an injury. He did a good job of calming the waters and set the tone for a shutout tonight."

The Scarlet and Gray will now travel to Bloomington, Ind., to face Indiana Thursday-Saturday to conclude the regular season. Game one begins at 8 p.m. ET Thursday live on Big Ten Network.

Left-hander John Havird received the win to improve to 4-0, throwing 5.2 scoreless innings on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Offensively, Pat Porter had a solid day at the plate to lead the Buckeyes. He went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, home run and four RBI. Porter leads the team with a career-high 44 RBI and nine home runs. The OSU senior also has reached base in 30 straight games (career-high).

"Pat has been taking great swings in great at-bats," Beals said. "He saw a bunch of changeups and squared up one fastball for a home run and that was the blow that separated the ball game."

Ohio State scored two runs in the top of the first vs. YSU left-hander Joe King when Pat Porter hit an opposite-field single to left and Zach Ratcliff doubled down the right field line. The Buckeyes tacked on a run in the third on a ground-rule double by Aaron Gretz vs. YSU reliever Ryan Krokos.

Porter extended the lead to 6-0 in the seventh when crushed a 2-0 pitch that bounced over the top of the wall in dead center for a two-run home run. Craig Nennig pushed the score to 7-0 in the ninth with a sacrifice fly.

The frames went scoreless until the sixth when Porter knocked in his second run of the day with a single to left on a 2-0 pitch vs. YSU lefty Austin Lujano. Havird got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth when fanned his sixth batter of the night. He was replaced by right-hander Seth Kinker, who tossed 1.1 innings on no hits or walks with a strikeout. Michael Horejsei threw 0.2 innings and allowed no runs or hits with one strikeout. Kyle Michalik pitched the ninth

Ohio State starter Jacob Niggemeyer had to leave the game in the bottom of the first due to injury as Havird came into the game with one out.

GAME NOTES

  • Pat Porter singled to left in the top of the first to extend his reached base streak to 30-consecutive games, while Troy Montgomery walked in his first at-bat to push his reached-base streak to total to 27 straight contests. Montgomery walked a season-high three times.
  • Montgomery stole third base in the top of the second to pass former Buckeye Kirby Pellant on the OSU stolen bases list (32). He is now tied for third with former Buckeyes Mike Check (2001) and Roy Marsh (1993) and is three shy of tying the school record held by Mike Harris with 35 in 2001.
  • Porter posted his 18th multi-hit game and his 11th multi-RBI game. Aaron Gretz picked up his sixth multi-hit game of the year.
  • Nick Sergakis collected his ninth multi-hit performance of 2015.
