Mooney shows Pa. visitor the ‘Gate’

By J.J. BENSON

CANTON ? It took three years for a team from the Mahoning Valley to receive an invitation to the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge.

But it took Cardinal Mooney only one game to prove why more area teams belong at the annual event.

The Cardinals racked up 313 yards of offense ? including 264 on the ground ? en route to a 27-6 victory over Gateway (Pennsylvania) Saturday night at Fawcett Stadium.

Mooney quarterback Dan McCarthy scored three touchdowns ? two by ground and one by air ? as the Cardinals improved to 2-0.

Last Friday WFMJ-TV sports reporter Mike Ackelson asked me to pick the best high school football team I?d seen this season.

My answers (Canfield and Ursuline) probably offended the fans of unbeaten Mooney, South Range and Howland. But since I haven?t seen those teams, I couldn?t pick them.

Mooney is not only the best team in the Valley but probably one of the top two in Ohio regardless of division.

As everyone knows, Mooney (6-0) is gunning for its third Division IV state title in four seasons. Two years ago, Mooney finished state runner-up.

I was at the game. Mooney was very fortunate to win this game. I'm very impressed with their defense(Johnny Simon is as good as advertised, though he needs to work on his technique a lot. He's mostly potential based on his size and athleticism), but their offense leaves a lot to be desired. They basically just out athlete you, which is a fine strategy at the high school level where there will be huge differences in athleticism between teams, but it will catch up to them eventually IMO.

St. V bottled up Mooney's offense for three quarters. Against good, well coached teams like St. V and Steubenville, Mooney will have a lot of trouble if they play the way they did tonight.

Very exciting game though, even if my team didn't come out on top.

Edit: To add to this, I'll give some of my thoughts on the Mooney players.

Firstly, if I had to rank them as prospects, I'd go Simon, McCarthy, Hill, Beachum, and Zordich.

John Simon has a very good frame and superior athleticism. He's a tremendous bull rusher and is good at recognizing plays(spotting pass plays and following plays away from him). He was rarely taken out of the play by St. V's offensive line. I didn't focus on him for too many plays, but I think it's obvious how good he is. He really holds the point of attack, but most of the time he's penetrating into the offensive backfield. I definitely think he needs to work on his technique, but with good coaching to go along with his ridiculous work ethic and measurables, he's a can't miss recruit IMO.

McCarthy was easily the best athlete on the field, but was definitely not the best quarterback. His speed is something else. One play the St. V running back(Carnell Evans) busted through the Mooney line and looked like he was going to hit pay dirt, but McCarthy ran him down from behind and tried to unsuccessfully rip the ball out. He was all over the field, recoving a fumble and making an interception(albeit an Anderson Russel special, though McCarthy was at least able to catch it). St. V didn't pass a whole lot, so it's hard to gauge how McCarthy is in coverage, but at the very least he's a special teams contributer year one and a contributer at safety in year two.

Hill was a lot more than I expected. Very good athlete that plays with tremendous intensity. He reminds me a lot of Walter Dublin, though probably a little bit smaller. He could end up being a Thad Gibson type player(though not as good as Thad IMO) for Oklahoma.

Beachum was also very impressive. He's an ok runner, though I don't see the vision or wiggle you'd expect for a division one back. I think he'd be an amazing rushing and receiving fullback, but I'm not sure I buy him as a runningback. He's a bull to bring down, and he loves to take and deliver hits(which he'll do a lot of running behind a PSU O-line). At linebacker, Beachum was also very impressive. From what I recall, he wasn't as active as Hill, but he was still in on a lot of plays. I like him at linebacker a lot. He's a poor man's Jordan Whiting IMO, though not by a whole lot. Don't be surprised when Beachum starts two years at linebacker at Penn State.

Zordich had a very pedestrian game. He was tackled easily even though he's a lot bigger and stronger than every player on St. V's defense. At linebacker, he made a few plays, but not nearly as many as McCarthy, Hill, Simon, or Beachum. I don't recall a single spectacular play that you expect players of his caliber to make. Probably just a bad game, but I just wasn't impressed.

Hey, as long as the outcome is the same as my senior year of high school when St. V played Mooney twice in one season. They beat us during the regular season and we beat them in the playoffs on the way to a state championship.

Men of Steel (Valley)

Undefeated Mooney upended Ursuline 37-14 for the SVC title.

By JOE SCALZO

YOUNGSTOWN ? After watching teammate Michael Zordich twice break long runs, only to get caught from behind on the 1-yard line, Mooney senior Taylor Hill was asked if he plans to tease him.

?Yeah, I think I?ll mess with him a little about that,? Hill said.

Countered Zordich: ?Taylor messes with me all the time. So that?s nothing new.?

If the Cardinals are struggling to carry the heavy expectations surrounding them this season, they haven?t shown it. Playing against arch-rival Ursuline Friday at Stambaugh Stadium, Mooney?s defense suffocated the Irish en route to a 37-14 win, clinching its fourth straight Steel Valley Conference title.

Just watched Mooney vs Columbus Bishop Watterson (Mooney was up 28-0 when I left)

...I was impressed, but not as much as I thought I would be...some of my thoughts:

- Zordich: better speed east and west than I had heard - CM runs some of those counter sweeps where the play brings you left and he comes back right (or vice versa). He had several runs like that where he just got outside the tackles and had some nice runs. I have a hard time seeing him play fullback in the Big 10 - but I think he will be a solid Big 10 LB (with another 25 lbs).

- Taylor Hill: Hill has a frame that can be expanded. I think it will be interesting to see where he projects at Oklahoma - definitely not a DL due to lack of height (barely 6'3") but he could be a game changer at LB or SS. I came away very impressed with Hill.

- McCarthy: so-so arm, but absolutely outstanding in the open field. Once he gets to the corner, he is gone. He could have run for 200 yards tonight if he wanted to - the QB keeper was wide _ss open all night.

- Beachum: Beachum is a tough, hard nosed runner. He is a JoePa type of kid - solid, not spectacular. I can see why he blows up the combines. His thighs are thick, runs with great balance. I thought his vision could be a little better in the open field, but my assumption is he is being taught to hit the hole no matter what his instincts say.

- Simon: overpursued a few plays, but often demanded double teams. He is a beast. I can't wait to see him this time next year! Runs well for a big guy and I think his frame can easily get up to 295/300 lbs in college.

Finally, does anyone know who #28 is for YCM? Wow. This kid barely sees the field, played a little DE, but he is as tall as Simon (6'4" ish), passes the look test - he appeared, along w/ Simon, to be the most physically imposing player on the YCM roster.

Mods, feel free to move to the individual player threads if necessary. Since this was focused on the YCM team, i thought this was the best place.

Mooney is the best team in Ohio HS football regardless of size. They will march toward their 2nd straight title with little in their way.

I don't know that I can disagree with you here but they will surely be tested in their region by St-V, CCC, or Stubenville. St-V gave them one of their toughest games of the year.

MooneyFootball.com shows SR Ray Allen as donning #28 - playing TE/LB at 6-2 and 231 pounds.
