YAC attack
For the past two weeks, receivers have piled up the YAC (yards after catch), turning short throws into long gains.
Against Michigan State, Troy Smith had three long touchdown passes, two of those the result of Santonio Holmes and Ted Ginn Jr. breaking tackles after relatively short passes.
Last week at Indiana, the trend continued. Smith completed six passes of 20 yards or longer, totaling 156 yards. The passes traveled 42 yards, with 114 yards coming on receivers’ runs after a catch.
The breakdown: Holmes 23 yards (throw 4, run 19), Holmes 28 (throw 3, run 25), Ryan Hamby 27 (throw 5, run 22), Ginn 27 (all throw), Ginn 25 (throw minus-1, run 26), Holmes 26 (throw 4, run 22).
"That’s something we try to do, get yards after catch," Ginn said. "The most important thing is to catch the ball, and then try to get (additional) yards."
