XBox Live - Purchase online or In Store?

"Barkin' up the wrong tree"
Just purchased a 360 yesterday. I am beyond giddy to take this thing out and see what it can do, but I need some coaching on best deals for Xbox live.

Is it better to purchase it online or buy a yearly "starter pack" from Wal-Mart/GameStop....etc

Seems equal in price, I don't need a headset or keyboard or any of that shit, I plan to use the system for about 70% netflix streaming - 30% gaming.

What do you suggest and what are some of the best deals out there?

Rep for help!

I've never looked into what they have at Walmart/Gamestop, so I'm no help there. But typically when my XBL membership is almost up, I just do a quick search on Amazon and sites like that to see who has a deal on it at that time. You can usually find somewhere selling XBL memberships for $10-$20 less than what you'd pay if you just went through the Xbox site. Most of them have codes you can redeem on the spot, so you don't have to wait on getting the actual card in the mail.

I think that's what you are asking, but I'm working (and a little hungover) so I might have misunderstood exactly what you meant.

I would not put my credit card on file with Microsoft if possible, for a variety of reasons. If you sign up for a promo and forget to unsubscribe, or the system has a hiccup and keeps billing you, or someone hacks the XBL system and grabs all of the personal data like just happened to the Sony consoles.

As always, slickdeals is the first place to check for deals, usually searching by title. It also gives you a good idea how often deals come up, so if you just missed one, you know if you can hold out a few weeks or might be waiting a few months.

Xbox live deals are extremely sporadic, but buy.com, buy.com on ebay, amazon are the most common sellers.

Before the price hike in service, the "great deal" price was typically about $30. Now that total is $40.

For instance, on 5/28, buy.com sold 2,000 one year subscriptions through ebay for $40:

They actually had it for 35 on 5/3 thru ebay, which is extremely rare and low.

...

Right now, Amazon is selling it for $44.99 shipped, which is a very good price and $5 over 12 months is pretty negligible, especially since XBL deals can appear every week or disappear for 3-6 months at a time.

Also, if you buy it through this link at the lowest retail price going right now, BP gets a small commission:
