Xbox Live May Kill Cable With Live Streaming Sports From ESPN - Microsoft - Gizmodo
While you never necessarily needed cable, the one gap in internet video service has always been the lack of live sports. According to the NY Times, Microsoft and Disney are looking to change that, bringing ESPN to your Xbox Live.

Xbox Live users can already access dated content via Netflix, but this move towards live streaming would be a major one towards killing off cable once and for all. Especially since it targets a dedicated audience (sports fans) that has significant overlap with Xbox Live's built-in gaming community.


The set-up would be similar to that of ESPN 360, which is already available from some ISPs. It would be based on a per-subscriber fee, and would include live streams of sporting events and possibly also interactive games that incorporate the ESPN brand. Live sports is the only thing keeping a large chunk of america from ditching their cable service and going with netflix, hulu, etc.

this would be outstanding.
 
XBL is $1-3 month.

$10-20 for ESPN.

$10-20 for Hulu.

That's a lot less than the 60-80 for HDTV service.
Until the quality of streaming video can look as good as cable/satellite I would never switch.

They have that now. NBC series via Netflix are crisp HD.

If hulu goes to a pay model, they'll undoubtedly support set-top streaming (probably via 360 among other routes) and HD.

The big question for me is if it will include a way to access ESPN360 from the Xbox as well as whatever events they have regularly scheduled. Getting around that little ISP snag for 360 would be a god-send. If I had a way to get most of the sports we get with Dish right now without Dish...
