This really amazes me, so I'm going to ask a serious question. Do Buckeye fans truly think that Akron, Kent and Youngstown make up a good non-conf schedule? Or, is this all some elaborate joke?

Do Buckeye fans realize just how pathetic the rest of the nation considers that lineup to be?

Of course not. This year's OOC schedule was "easy" When was the last time WVU played Texas? USC? or the like OOC?

And, by the way, defend:
Directional Michigan (western) (5-7)
Marshall (3-9)
Maryland (6-6)
East Carolina (7-5)

Elaborate joke?

I can't speak for them but I'm assuming most comments like that are geared toward WVU's lack of respect overall and not just this year.

No, those statements on this board (and in conversations I've had with folks in Columbus) are used in the same breath as "Why is WVU ranked higher than us...?"

Which, of course, implies that they're talking about this year.

Why is WVU ranked higher than OSU? Because, as weak as their non-conf schedule might be perceived to be by some, it's still better than OSU's.

Bullshit. It's the timing of the loss. Plain and simple.

I think a much more compelling argument is that West Virginia's loss was much earlier in the year than Ohio State's.

As weak as Ohio State's OOC schedule was this year - largely due to the fall in rank of Washington from the time when they were scheduled - West Virginia's is also weak.

That leaves the timing of the loss as the more important factor.

Timing affects the human voters, sure, but tOSU is behind Mizzou and West Va. in 5 of the 6 computers right now. That's due more to the weakening of the Big Ten overall by the performance of TSUN, Minnesota, NW'ern (losing to Duke) this year.

2/3 to 1/3

I agree with your point re: computers. But, Sagrin also has VTU above OSU. Colley has Georgia over OSU....

Point is, computers aren't the holy grail either.

I guess if WVU had lost three weeks ago, and OSU in Sept, then you'd see OSU #2 right now in the human polls... the effect of which might make a big difference in today's BCS>... though, I won't do the math.

Oh, I agree that losing late in the season is much harder on a team than losing early. But, all other things being equal, WVU's non-conf schedule is better.

Not by much, if you go by wins and losses. Certainly not enough to warrant the conclusion that WVU's played a harder schedule.. and we're only looking OOC.. Name 1 team in the BE who goes better than .500 in the Big Ten other than WVU?

Granted the Big Ten was allegedly "down" this year.... But, I'd suggest the BE was "up" and it still was only OK.

What BKB said.

To put it another way: If I were you, I'd talk about non-conference schedule too. Not because it is a point of overwhelming superiority. It is barely a point at all. But it's all you got.

Our schedule is ranked higher by every legitimate measure there is. Our loss is not as bad as yours, our best win is better than yours; and all of this doesn't mean squat.

If Oklahoma wins, there will be no reason to talk. We'll see you in New Orleans and we'll see you here after the game.

Oh, wait. No we won't.

For B12, SEC or even Pac10 teams I can understand this line of reasoning. But from a WVU fan, bringing up SOS, OOC or in-conf, makes little sense. Is OSU's OOC schedule slightly more lousy than WVU's dismal one? Perhaps, but does that really matter?

How about the mediocre conferences? The lone powerhouses do not play themselves (OSU, WVU). Louisville, Rutgers, USF, UConn have all been wildly overrated this year. Same with UM, Wisky, PSU, Purdue. Playing above expectations: Cincy & Ill.

Where is this distinction again?

I would certainly take WVU, Cincy, South Florida and Rutgers over OSU, Illinois, Mich and Wisconsin.

Sure you will. If Oklahoma and WVU win this weekend, I'll make this place my home and I'll even come back Jan 8th, just so you guys can tell me how right I was.

On what metric?
WVU is the cream of the BE crop now that Vtech, BC and Miami are gone. You don't see that?
Cinci? You realize Ohio State and Michigan and Wisconsin schedule Cinci as an assured W, right? (THough, admittedly that didn't work out for Wiscy not long ago)
Rutgers? Are you serious? Yeah, nice little run under Schiano.. when he gets the PSU job, Rutgers goes right back in the shitter it came from
South Florida? A team that dropped... what was it..... 5 straight?

What was that about a joke?
