Buckeyes Team to Beat; Pryor Repeats

CHICAGO - Five-time defending Big Ten Conference champion Ohio State was tabbed by media members as the preseason No. 1 team in the Big Ten and junior quarterback Terrelle Pryor was the repeat choice of the media as the Big Ten's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones was also the repeat choice as the Big Ten's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

The conference announced the poll and players of the year Monday during the first day of the Big Ten's annual media days in Chicago.

This year marks the first since 1998 that the Big Ten's Preseason Defensive and Offensive Players of the Year have been repeat selections from the previous season. Ohio State's Andy Katzenmoyer (defense) and Wisconsin's Ron Dayne (offense) are the only other pair to accomplish the feat since at least 1996. Jones, selected the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year at the conclusion of the 2009 season and a consensus All-American, is the first back-to-back Preseason Defensive Player of the Year since Ohio State's James Laurinaitis in 2007 and 2008, and Pryor is the first player to repeat as Preseason Offensive Player of the Year since Dayne earned the honor in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

Pryor has guided Ohio State to two Big Ten Championships and two Bowl Championship Series games in his first two seasons. Last year he threw for 2,094 yards and 18 touchdowns and also led the Buckeyes in rushing with 779 yards.

He was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the 2010 Rose Bowl Game. In the 26-17 win over Oregon Pryor had a career-high 266 yards passing with two touchdowns, 72 yards rushing and he directed Ohio State's offense to a Rose Bowl record 41:37 time of possession.

Pryor enters his junior campaign already 11th among Ohio State's career total offense leaders with 4,808 yards. His 1,410 rushing yards is the most among current Buckeyes (Brandon Saine has 1,071 and Dan Herron has 1,039).

Jim Tressel thinks Terrelle Pryor could throw the ball 30 times a game this season
Published: Tuesday, August 03, 2010, 2:05 PM
Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer

One of the most frequent questions from Ohio State fans is how much Jim Tressel will "open up" the offense now that quarterback Terrelle Pryor is entering his third year as a starter.

If "opening up" means passing more, Tressel might be ready to let it go quite

Once he took over as the starter in 2008, Pryor averaged 15 throws per game as a freshman. As a sophomore, he threw the ball about 23 times per game. At the Big Ten meetings today, Tressel said he thinks Pryor could throw the ball between 25 to 35 times per game as a junior. Troy Smith, for example, averaged 24 throws per game when he won the Heisman Trophy as a senior in 2005.

"I would bet he'll throw more than he did last season," Tressel said of Pryor. "Terrelle would probably throw a lot more than his sophomore year. It would be a bigger jump this year than it would be next year, because he's making that progression. I think he'll have a chance to do some things he loves doing, which is throwing the football."

I was watching college football live this afternoon and Brian Griese was covering the Miami Hurricanes schedule predictions. Of course he picked a hurricane victory in the Shoe but he also came out and said Jacory Harris will be the better QB on the field that day. Crock of shit and I hope more people say these things where Pryor can hear them. I just see him being more and more determined when people discredit him. He's going to be a monster this season.

Wow sounds like Tressel finally believes in his QB. When he started believing in Troy, because Troy was READY, the offense took off. Sounds like the same progression is happening with Terrelle. The offense should be sick this year. Terrelle becoming a very good passer, along with his running ability is going to make us unstoppable (hopefully).

I was listening to the "common man" yesterday (which was probably a mistake) and he made the following statement: As a QB, Terrelle Pryor is below average.

So, does the "common man" think that half of the QBs in the country(all those QBs that are at least average or better), or even just the Big Ten are better than TP? Does he believe that there are at least 5 QBs in the Big Ten that could have done for OSU what TP did in the Rose Bowl had they traded places with him?

I know I am just ranting, but seriously...

Point taken, but the options were/are kind of slim for sports radio during that hour. I think 1230AM was talking about A-rod and his 600th HR, so I opted for some Buckeye talk. But I concur, pretty lame...(still better than hooley though)

I listen to those 2 (common man & the Torg) almost everyday. The best days are when Craig Krenzel is either the 3rd man in the conversation of filling in for one of them. I will agree their knowledge of Ohio State is lacking and they usually are just stirring the pot. The only thing I will say for the Torg is he does know Hockey.

Spiels is good. Hooley is the worst excuse for a spots talk guy ever, and Cowherd is ESPN's guy. He makes some good points, but those are typically lost in his bashing someone or something and his current love affair. I just wish Pual Keels would do a show with someone. I love the Buckeye Roundtable during the season.

i buy hes an average "quarterback" if i look at vision, arm strength, accuracy, hes probably average in the big ten. when i toss in the intangibles and his athleticism and what he makes defenses do, hes much better than that. so to me it would depend on the context of his statement.

youd likely be shocked to find out that an anonymous survey of big ten players ranked pryor as the most overrated then...

It's amazing the transformation these guys go through in their time at tOSU, and at other big time programs. Someone posted a freshman and senior picture of Lil Animal in the countdown thread, so I thought I'd do the same for TP. Hopefully bulking up won't mean he loses any speed.
