QB/WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

Pryor feels offense is ready to roll
Thursday, October 15, 2009
By Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Receiver Ray Small said this week that an Ohio State offensive explosion could come at any time, and that quarterback Terrelle Pryor would be the catalyst. Pryor said yesterday that he has picked up on that vibe.

"I feel confident that we will play a lot better this week and for the next six, seven games that we have," Pryor said.

The state of mind came after Pryor reviewed video of his performance against Wisconsin, which included 5-of-13 passing and his sixth interception of the season, but also a 32-yard touchdown pass.

"I find a way every week to get confident, but I really feel confident about this week," Pryor said. "I really feel like I got something done with my footwork by watching the last game, and I feel like our timing is so much -- it's real good this week.

"The coaches have put in some pretty good plays this week, too, and I think we could light up the scoreboard."

Overcoming his past

Quarterback Terrelle Pryor made a case for patience as he continues to develop into a complete quarterback rather than a runner playing quarterback.

In that respect, he said, his high school program (Jeannette, Pa.) is something he has had to overcome. Pryor largely was turned loose to run around and make plays, rather than learning to throw from the pocket.

"It will be awhile (for me) to get better and better," he said, "especially if you never really came out of a type of high school that really develops quarterbacks like that. Coming into a situation like this, you've got a lot more to learn, and I'm willing to learn."

That appears to be a diss against his High School team, blaming them for his slow progress.

Did anyone else get that impression?

Apparently this guy did:

I wish I could find the quote but I remember a local coach here in TN, George Quarles (Maryville High School), coached Pryor in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He was asked about Pryor and basically what he said was that Pryor was the most amazing athlete he has ever been around or had coached but that his mechanics were so poor, he couldn't even do a 3-step drop properly.

think about that a little and take it into perspective.....

And hence the need for continued support and patience from all of us!

And also why I think he'll continue to look better on the road versus at home.

On the road he just makes the plays that are there within the system. At home I think he's still trying to be perfect every time.

It's still a diss, but the truth hurts sometimes.

I'm not sure it's a diss. He and his high school coach were pretty tight. He didn't go to some huge school....his high school only has about 450 kids and they won games because of his athletic ability...that's all that mattered.

He has the drive and motivation to get better and he has improved. That's all that matters.

to a point i suppose, but that isn't the impression i got. if a navy qb made the statement that he didn't spend enough time working 5 and 7 step drops for him to develop into that type of qb while in college would you consider that a diss?

this happens to a lot of qb's when they transition from high school to college and some even from college to the nfl. the offense you run has a significant impact on your development as a player. i suspect this is not lost on pryor's former coach and i have to think he expected pryor to have some struggles transitioning his game based on his experience.

pryor is going to be just fine. his problems are with his mechanics and decision making. he certainly has the intelligence and the physical ability. all he needs is time. i don't think it will come together this week. i doubt it will happen next week. but i do believe it will happen this season.

I think Pryor is fine. IMO, he should not be afraid to use legs more at the the beginning of the game. This will of open up passing lanes. I also think that we have strayed away from the I-formation which hurts our running backs, especially Boom.

Pryor needs to just play and have fun. Don't worry about what the critics call you as long as it is not "loser". Be confident and throw a few jump balls to your excellent wide-outs.

Obviously he wasn't a polished QB coming out of HS. This is not a Diss on anyone few are! He didn't grow up in the Manning or Elway household. He was not exposed to the fundamentals of QB play. Its no ones fault..its just his situation.
