Not knocking TP at all - but what are you basing this on?

When you talk about highly touted athletic QBs of the past few years some names that come to mind are Vince Young, Xavier Lee, Ryan Perriloux, Michael Bush, and Tim Tebow. The ONLY one of those who contributed at QB as a Frosh was Tebow and to a much lesser extent Bush as a RB. All had great athleticism and cannon arms.

Granted, TP has some special measurables - particularly his speed. But the word "good" implies that he can play the position. And I haven't heard anybody saying he is an out of the box QB ala Mustain or Clausen.

Don't misread. I love TP and his potential. If you had said "rare for a guy to have the potential to be this good right off the bat" I would agree. But I didn't see anything in his HS videos to show me that he can read defenses, go through a progression or hit on a timing pattern. We don't even know how well he can run the option at this level.

The only thing anyone seems to have observed up to this point is a flawed delivery (a bit over the top).

And I am not so much replying to your post as the rampant implication that the only thing OSU needs to become a better team is for TB to pull up lame.

Basically what I was trying to say is that if TP were were forced to play anything more than as a situational type of guy (ala Tebow in 2006) whatever the reason, I would be surprised if he was a stud right off the bat. I have no doubt that he has the potential and probably will be a hell of a situational threat this year. But in high level college football, and I am talking Top 25 football, to be a stud QB (in my book), you have to be able to be an aerial threat. I would be shocked if TP would be able to hone his skills to that level in just a short period of time.

But then again, when I think of how good our o-line should play this year and with Beanie in the backfield (not to mention the Brians), that would give a young QB a lot of room for error.

I just hope that TB plays so well that TP is barely even needed or noticed.

Who says he needs to be a polished passer to make a part time impact this year?

We don't even know how well he can run the option at this level.
Your standards shifted quite radically there. What happened to evaluating his film? Pryor is about as good of a "out of the box option QB" as you can find. Sure, he may flop like any recruit, but if anyone can handle the option as a frosh, it's probably him.
_________

How much difficult passing will Pryor actually need to do in order to make an impact?

Granted Pryor & Tebow are different athletes, and OSU has a lot better RB talent (not just at starter) than FL, but look at Tebow's passing statistics as a frosh.

SMU 0-0
UCF 6-9 (42-0 blowout).
TEN 0-0
UK 1-2
ALA 1-1
LSU 2-2 ... 2 td
AUB 0-0
UGA 0-0
VAN 1-3
USC 0-2
WC 10-12 (62-0 blowout)
FSU 0-1
ARK 0-0
OSU 1-1

I've never been more confident that a player will suceed than I am with TP. This is not just because of the "hype" because that comes and goes. But TP has everything I would be looking for in a big time player. First of all he is the most natrually gifted athlete on our team (yep I said it more gifted than Beanie and everyone else). The kid has things such as his height, speed, quickness, shiftiness, and the natural arm strength that you just CANNOT teach. Then there is the head on his shoulders, he did not take the easy way out and sign with Michigan and start from day one. He knowingly walked into a situation where competition would be present, and a situation that in theory at least he could not of even played a single minute his first year. Lastly and most importantly is the fact that TP has "it" the drive/ hunger to be great. You can see from interviews with Tressel and other players that Pryor is not content with relying on his natrual abilities. But rather he wants to learn to push himself to watch film when he wont even be the starter. To when challenged by a senior leader and future first round pick (Malcom Jenkins) to not back down and to throw directly Malcolms way. To go out of his way to make a situation that could of been akward and a distraction (him prob getting PT even tho Todd B is the starter) into something thats comfortable. All because he takes the time and effort to get along with Todd B and not only that but to also ltry to learn from Tood. Outside of an injury I dont see how TP could be anything but a HUGE HUGE success.

Man, if Todd gets benched there will be some vbillionaires rolling around. I don't think that will happen, but really, TP will see some playing time in the first couple games, at least until we go up against SC. I think a lot of things really depend on that game, hopefully Tressel doesn't try that two-quarterback system like he did with Texas in 2005.

Well I got a chuckle out of it. It was actually quite well done. Most of the other crap that makes fun of Ohio State is weak.

This is a great point. Tebow didn't need to throw it to make an impact. TP is a special kind of athlete. He'll make an impact just being on the field.

BTW BB - since you are online and the trivia expert around here.

What was the name of that potential OSU quarterback from Florida who decided to pursue a major league baseball career instead, then came back to OSU when it didn't work out?

I never hear anything about him anymore.

If you'd have asked that in the 2008 tOSU QB discussion thread, instead of in the Pryor thread, I'd have told you.
