WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

Didn't put this in the existing thread because there is some pretty neat information here and I wanted to make sure it was seen. If this isn't ok, I guess it'll get moved. This is from Herbstreit's radio show when Ted Ginn's name was brought up.

Herbstreit said, and I quote: "I would be real close to benching Ted Ginn. I don't know who got to him, whether it was an agent, or a friend who said "It's all about the NFL, baby!" but Ted Ginn is scared. He's timid. He's afraid to bust a seam on kick returns. He just heads for the side line. They should take him off kick returns because it's obvious that he doesn't want to do it. He's a non factor. I was standing on the side line for the game and the coaches have to scream at him from the sideline to get lined up correctly. I'm not sure where his head is."

Wow. If that's not calling Ted out then I don't know what is.

Ouch. Can't really take issue with it though, as much as I would like to.

(As I was hearing this the wife turns to me and says, "That's kind off what you've been getting at for weeks now")

Whoa. Not only can you talk football with the wife, she actually listens to you too? Brings a tear to my eye. You are a lucky man...:)

Watch Marvin Harrison though...he doesn't exactly take a beating...in fact, there are some games where he basically doesn't get hit at all. As a receiver, I don't think he has to get pounded, he just has to play smart. I see him run side-to-side and backwards just like everyone else, but it seems to me he is still trying to make the circus plays he could get away with in high school, rather than he's afraid of getting hit.

I have grown weary this year of watching TG dance way too much on nearly every kick return, be it punt or kickoff. IMO, at some point a coach needs to get on him about all the dancing. Run and make a good cut and run! This is also true on most end arounds that have been attempted this year with him. Too much dancing. Every play doesn't have to be a home run; he needs to be reminded that singles and doubles are fine and that the home runs will come.

i dont think ginn is afraid at all IMO. i think he knows he is a small mofo and what he is trying to do is what worked semi successful last year and that was using his speed to the outside last year and that will only go so far because good opponents and opponents with fundamentals will eliminate that possibilities so he needs to get up field more. the kid isnt afraid otherwise he wouldnt of been recruited as the #1 CB prospect in the country. i saw him at glenville on plenty of occasions laying the wood so im not seeing how he is afraid of any type of impact. i really dont see why we are talking about ginn anyways. its not his fault. should be bench holmes, gonzalez, and hall because their numbers are bad as well? the problem is within the system itself and the ability to get the ball to all of our recievers.

If there's one game that I would definitelly NOT bench Teddy for, it's scUM lite. I think I remember that he had just a little success against them last year. :wink2:

Marvin Harrison doesn't return punts and kickoffs though...

True enough, but Ginn has to know after last year that a) that's where he can make an immediate impact, and b) he can do it without getting killed, so I don't know...it's hard to figure. As I say, I see it more that he did a lot of dancing and eventually broke a bunch in HS, and doesn't quite grasp yet that Big Ten football teams are full of the one guy who could tackle you in HS...

Ginn wasn't afraid to get hit last year. Just look at his punt returns. Three of the four punt TDs were when he took the return and just straight ahead with it...granted he made some jukes and moves but they were while run was running near full speed forward. The one he hearly broke against Michigan (the return just before his TD return) where he spun to avoid the tackler and almost fell only to rip off a 20-yarder shows how he played with cajones grande and reckless abandon. Against Michigan, he was taking on the defenders with hits. Now he frickin' tip-toes and tries to analyze everything once he gets the ball. For one game, just one game, I'd like him to head these words: "Just fucking run."

Or you did.

I agree. TG2 is not a good route runner yet, he's being timid, and he's trying too hard to turn water into wine on the field without being touched. He has forgotten what North and South are.

Exactly, last year he was decisive and would just knife through the coverage, it looks like he doesnt want any contact at all now.

Go look at the Michigan St. clip, where he took a punt return to the house, when he cut throw the coverage, he actually broke an arm tackle when he was in the middle of the coverage and made it to the endzone. You cant do it untouched everytime...

1) people who are sissies aren't outstanding blockers. Ginn has been a great blocker downfield. I realize it's different than getting hit, but he is a great blocker on running plays. besides, last year he wasn't afraid of contact. Its a mental thing, not a heart thing.

2) Anyone think the coaches might have taught teddy to not take big hits like he did last year? Tons of times on the sidelines, he would take the guys on helmet to helmet, or try to fight for an extra yard, which is foolish for both injuries and fumbles given his size. I'm not suggesting they want him to go backwards, but its not that far of a reach.

3) ask anyone who is at the game and they will tell you that Teddy was open a lot... but since it wasn't visible on TV people keep saying he's a bad route runner. I say that's bull. He's not a good route runner, but that's not the problem.

4) Teddy Ginn is given HORRENDOUS routes to run. Most of the time this season he has been running 5 yard out routes to free up Holmes. It is painfully obvious that we aren't looking to pass the ball to him on those plays. We haven't seen slants. We haven't seen rollout plays with him coming across the middle. We've seen the same route over and over and over on most plays. I'm sure there were some non 5-yard out routes run by teddy, but the fact that I have been lulled to sleep by a useless route run by one of the most dangerous open field players in the game, is awful.

5) Our blocking on kickoffs (the wedge) was awful against PSU. That being said, if Ginn keeps returning kicks like that, then Gonzo needs to go back there. Kickoffs are more about speed than dancing anyway (unlike PR's), so I doubt we'd lose much. Plus Gonzo can probably absorb more big hits with his frame.

6) Ginn has never seen the ball as a WR, and its frustrating him. He's seen teh ball on screens, annoyingly predictable sweeps & reverses, and on returns. Maybe I'm forgetting one pass, but the only time I remember him getting the ball beyond 10 yards was by our 3rd string QB. After the two drops in the texas game, they didn't try to get it to him (maybe rightfully so, who knows). Since then, he has been a decoy. That has to wear on you when you know what you can do with the ball in space. The few passes he has seen have often been poor passes by Smith.
