Tressel said that three senior walkons have been awarded scholarships: offensive linemen Scott Sika and Chris Malone, and tight Ricky Crawford. The news was announced at a team meeting Wednesday as the rest of the Buckeyes cheered.

"All those guys have been here a long time and have taken a lot of snaps in practice with not a whole bunch of glory and have been good citizens and good students, so we were able to reward them," Tressel said. "Ricky hasn't stopped smiling. I think he slept last night with a smile.

"Our guys know who has given a lot, and our guys know the difference between how fortunate they are that are on scholarship and those that are just fighting the fight and working part-time jobs and doing all the rest just to have chance to be part of it. It's really one of the neat things. I wish I had 10 [scholarships to give.]"

The Crawfords' chaotic carpool

EYES ON THE PRIZE: After walking on at Ohio State in 2008, backup tight end Ricky Crawford was awarded a full scholarship this fall. (Neal C. Lauron, Dispatch)

Ricky Crawford knew two things had to happen when he opted in the spring of 2008 to pursue his dream of playing football at Ohio State.

No.1: He had to walk-on and prove himself.

No.2: He needed a ride.

Thus began an interesting and repeated journey. That's because Crawford, the middle of three kids of a single mother, couldn't afford to move to an apartment near campus. Also, living in the Polaris area well north of I-270, he, his older sister Tiffany and younger brother Justin, had shared one car for years.

"We kind of got used to having to share a long time ago," Ricky said.
"He always wanted to play for Ohio State, and he went the extra mile to make it happen," Justin said. "Pretty much, he's on a schedule and he's on a mission."

Ricky finally was awarded a full-ride scholarship by coach Jim Tressel at the start of this fall quarter, but it didn't change his commuting schedule.

"Since it was only going to cover me for two quarters, I just decided to keep living at home," Ricky said. He puts the $700 or so he gets per month as a housing allowance from his full scholarship toward helping more with the car and other family expenses.

In terms of prestige, though, the scholarship is invaluable.

"It's very exciting, because he has worked very hard to get where he is," Justin said. "Me and my whole family, we're just really proud of him."

Of course, several of the players were not working on improving past performances. Defensive lineman Dexter Larimore, offensive linemen Bryant Browning, Connor Smith and Josh Kerr, tight end Ricky Crawford, wide receivers Taurian Washington and Grant Schwartz, kicker Devin Barclay and long snapper Jake McQuaide all saw their first and perhaps only chances to work out for scouts come on Pro Day as they were not invited to the Combine.

4.73 for Crawford
