WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Holmes ready for a breakout season

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS.COM BREAKOUT PLAYERS

WIDE RECEIVER

Santonio Holmes, Soph. Ohio State - Holmes was a fantastic complementary receiver to Michael Jenkins last year catching 32 passes for 549 yards and seven touchdowns, and now he should flourish as the team's top receiver. He's a big-play, big-game playmaker with two touchdown grabs in the Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State and was sensational against Michigan. He has tremendous speed and is tremendous in the open field averaging 17.2 yards per catch last year.

I think he will put up some good numbers this year, but it all depends on the qb, offensive line and running game.

On the other hand... you have to think that if the OL and/or QB is struggling... that we'll have to be a little more creative in getting the ball in the Hands of 'playmakers'... which you have to think that Santonio would be at the top of the list. I tend to think that we'll take at least a few more risks on Offense just because of the punting situation... (Not to say I wouldn't love to see Houston or whoever keep the punting roll going but it seems hard to assume at this point that he/they will be that good.)

" If Zwick can hit him on stride, we could be explosive on offense...."

Amen to that!! Don't get me wrong, I loved what Craig Krenzel brought to our team (especially his leadership, and oh yea, a NC!!), but what he did not provide was a dynamite passing attack. He was good at what he did and what was asked of him, but hitting WR's in stride was a bit lacking.

If Zwick OR Smith (as he could still be the man) are able to not only avoid mistakes, but take our passing game to the next level--- Watch Out!! Alot of people around the country sing the praises of the WR's in places like UM and USC and Cal, but I literally believe our Wr's are as good as any in the country and with the right QB and the right play calling (which I also think we'll have this year) our receivers could and will be getting as much pub as anyone.

Holmes WILL have a great year. One or more of our other receiviers WILL step up. I like our chances in every game we play, and if the stars line up right and out QB to WR production will help our team to many wins. At worst, I think we are setting up superbly for a run at the NC next year, and could make things interesting this year.

Santonio Holmes now #3 single game receiving yards record holder

Reception yards record (single game):
#1 - 253y - Terry Glenn @ Pittsburgh 1995
#2 - 220y - Gary Williams v. Florida State 1991
#3 - 218y- Santonio Holmes v. Marshall 2004
#4 - 217y - David Boston v. Michigan 1998

Santonio now joins Terry Glenn, Gary Williams and David Boston as the only OSU receivers to have a 200+ yard receiving game. No one has had more than one.

I'm glad Santonio had a huge game and was there for us today, but in the long run I'll be much happier if they can spread it around some more than they did today (and I believe they will work on that a lot). The Oregon State receiver had over 300 yards last night but they got lit up because they didn't go anywhere else.

Someone mentioned in the gameday thread that his returning punts is dangerous because of the possibility of injury.

It scared me a little when he did get hurt on the one return. We are deep at WR but it would be a serious blow to lose him.

I'm not really sure how I feel about his duty of returning punts. He's a weapon there but it does increase his chances of being hurt.

I really thought we'd be seeing Ginn returning some kicks.
