WR Ken-Yon Rambo (Grey Cup Champion - CFL)

Rambo?s second comeback
Return from knee injury not the most amazing return for Stampeders star receiver
By ERIC FRANCIS, Calgary Sun
Last Updated: July 29, 2010

Sure, there was a time when Ken-Yon Rambo wondered whether this day would ever come.

Hobbling around on crutches a year ago, awaiting surgery on his torn ACL, the 31-year-old Stamps receiver wondered if he?d ever get a chance to repeat as the CFL?s leading receiver.

The combination of his age, the possibility of losing a step and the fact CFL contracts aren?t guaranteed had him pondering life after football.

However, for a man who literally fought for his life 14 years ago, fighting for his career was much less traumatic.

Once the knee surgery was done and his rehab was mapped out for him, he was confident he?d overcome his latest setback.

?I?ve been through some things in my lifetime, and it?s just another bump in the road,? philosophized Rambo, who plans to suit up for his first game of the season Saturday against Winnipeg.

?I talk to my mom ? she has a lot of wisdom. As she says, ?You have a course and you just have to keep on going.? It?s life.?

Rambo's desire never in doubt
By IAN BUSBY, QMI Agency
Last Updated: July 31, 2010

All those hours spent on a training table or working on a treadmill can let the mind wander.

So there were obviously times when Ken-Yon Rambo questioned all the work he was doing and whether it was actually worth it.

It?s been a long road of recovery from a torn ACL suffered July 24, 2009, at B.C. Place Stadium against the B.C. Lions.

Throughout the past calendar year, there were ups and downs for the 31-year-old Los Angeles native, but all the time off did was reaffirm his passion for his job.

There is plenty of introspection when you are sitting around watching others play, but Rambo seems to have won the gold medal in mental gymnastics.

?It was either you want to play football or you don?t want to play football,? Rambo said about the questions he had of himself. ?Are you done or are you not done? That?s what went through my head.

?Do you still love football as much as you think you love football? All those things went through my head.

?The answer was yes, yes, yes. I love playing and I want to get back on the field. That?s my goal.?

When Rambo steps out on McMahon Stadium?s turf Saturday night to face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7:30 p.m., TSN), that goal will be achieved.

Not only did the Stamps want him back, they need him now. P.K. Sam has a knee injury and is out for the next two months, at least.

So Rambo will switch positions, moving into the slot for the first time since 2007.

But he hasn?t lost any confidence in his abilities to make an impact for his team, no matter where he lines up.

?I?ve been through so much stuff. I never had a doubt in what I could do,? Rambo said. ?It was a mental thing going through rehab and doing that stuff and getting back to your potential.

?You have doubts. It will slip your mind. You?re human. Is it going to stick? Are you going to let that stick? Then you have no heart.

?With the rehab ? it?s a life thing. I learned a lot of things through this ACL injury.?

The Canadian Press CALGARY?Ken-Yon Rambo caught six passes for 86 yards and one touchdown in his first game back with Calgary in more than a year, as the Stampeders hung on to beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-20 on Saturday.

CALGARY ? There were two humps Ken-Yon Rambo had to get over to believe he had fully recovered from the potentially career-ending knee injury he suffered more than a year ago.

One was physical. He ran miles of sprints during the rehab process, and made cuts off his surgically repaired right knee to strengthen the joint and show that he could make those dazzling moves to shake off a defender when he really needed to.

The question remained: Could he take an awkward hit? The kind of hit that landed him in this fix in the first place?

Rambo got his answer early, in the second quarter of his first game in more than a year.

On July 31 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Rambo was dragged down from behind by safety Ian Logan at the end of a 38-yard catch-and-run play. Rambo thought the tackle was a little too similar to the Javier Glatt horse-collar tackle that caused the injury in the first place, and he went after Logan, throwing the ball at him in anger.

A month later, though, Rambo knows the tackle was a turning point.

?When (Logan) tackled me in the first game, that really was a test,? said Rambo. ?And that really helped me out. Just getting hit and things of that nature just lets you know that everything?s OK.?

Rambo magic catches on
Star of 2008 returns to old form after surgery

New Stamp puts team before self

CALGARY - In Ken-Yon Rambo's own words, "the old Rambunctious is coming back."

It didn't take long for Calgary Stampeders quarterback Henry Burris to recognize that guy.

"In his first game back against Winnipeg, the first drive, he gets a touchdown catch," Burris recalled.

"Immediately after that touchdown catch, he did a celebration where he drew up a barrier and he just blew it up, and he said he would do that because he's had to work so hard to get back to where he is today, and when he got his first touchdown, he said he would attribute it to all that hard work.

"When he blew up that barrier, we knew it was on from there."

Rambo runs forever for career TD
Receiver sprints 100 yards for longest major of his career
By WES GILBERTSON, CALGARY SUN
Last Updated: October 1, 2010 11:03pm

Calgary Stampeders receiver Ken-Yon Rambo has made a habit of hitting the century mark.

Never like this, though.

On Calgary's fourth offensive play of Friday's 46-21 victory over the Montreal Alouettes at McMahon Stadium, Rambo accepted a slant pass from quarterback Henry Burris and packed his bags for a long haul, sprinting 100 yards for the longest touchdown of his career.

?The last time I ran 100 yards was back in track, when I used to run the 100 metres. That was back in high school,? Rambo said. ?I've never had a 100-yard play before, so that was big. That was big for our team.?

Rambo's major came just four minutes after Burris' 61-yard strike to Romby Bryant and gave the Stamps a two-touchdown lead early in the opening quarter of a game some were billing as a could-be Grey Cup preview.

Thanks to a key block from slotback Jabari Arthur, Rambo wasn't touched on his trek to the endzone. Usually armed with a creative celebration, the 31-year-old pass-catcher simply dove across the stripe.

?I was tired, man,? Rambo explained. ?I was ready to jump in there. I was like, 'Oh, come here goal-line. C'mon goal-line, when you gonna get here?' It was awesome.?

The Alouettes secondary simply didn't have an answer for Smilin' Hank and his offensive arsenal in Friday's lopsided showdown at McMahon Stadium.

Rambo finished with a career-high 169 aerial yards, while Bryant added 146 yards and a pair of majors. Nik Lewis was credited with 49 yards, one touchdown and the hardest hit fans in Calgary have seen since Dion Phaneuf was traded to Toronto.

Stamps? Rambo fearless
By WES GILBERTSON, QMI Agency
Last Updated: November 13, 2010

Apparently, Ken-Yon Rambo really isn't afraid of anything.

It was no surprise the Calgary Stampeders' smooth-talking receiver and proud Ohio State alumni was exchanging insults with Penn State product Daryll Clark ahead of Saturday's NCAA football showdown between the host Buckeyes and Nittany Lions at Ohio Stadium.

But he wouldn't dare talk trash with former Penn State star and current Stamps coach John Hufnagel, would he?

"I would definitely talk to Huf about the game," Rambo said with a grin. "Matter of fact, I am going to mention it to him. I'm going to ask what does he think about the game and he better tell me, 'We're going to lose.'

"They're coming into The Shoe, in front of 110,000 fans -- a whole bunch of scarlet and grey. I don't think the Brittany Lions are ready for that."

You could ask thousands of former football stars for advice of prolonging your professional career, and not one would recommend cracking jokes about your head's coach alma mater.

Rambo, though, has already proven he's not scared of anything.

Coming off reconstructive knee surgery, the 32-year-old racked up 1,172 receiving yards and scored eight touchdowns in 14 regular-season outings, perhaps surprising everybody but himself with his fearless nature just one year removed from a career-threatening injury.

"Going through the trials and tribulations of my young life, I know what I'm capable of doing," Rambo said. "It was just another bump in the road. You're going to go through many bumps in the road and it was just something I had to go over. I had to put my mind to it. I was determined and I got back on the field."

He's not just back on the field, he's back in a starring role.

Stamps re-sign Rambo
By IAN BUSBY, QMI Agency
Last Updated: February 10, 2011

As you might?ve heard, there was a bit of a pigskin party in Ken-Yon Rambo?s hometown last weekend.

And after attending some of the Super Bowl XLV festivities in Dallas, the Calgary Stampeders receiver is itching to return to the turf.

?I think about football every day,? Rambo told QR77 Radio. ?All I do is think about football and what I can do to help the team.?

Although buzz is building for next weekend?s Heritage Classic showdown between the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens at McMahon Stadium, the full-time tenants made their own headlines Thursday morning, announcing they?ve signed Rambo to a contract extension.

Terms of the details were not disclosed, but it?s a good bet the 32-year-old pass-catcher will be wearing Red & White for the remainder of his three-down football career.

?I wouldn?t want to go anywhere else,? he said.

After returning from a torn ACL last season, Rambo hauled in 72 passes for 1,172 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 regular-season games. If he hadn?t missed the first four outings while he completed his rehab, he would have easily led the CFL in yardage ? and, as he pointed out, been named to the all-star squad.

?Ken-Yon was faced with an adverse injury, made a commitment to be back on the field for us and played very well last season,? said Stamps GM/head coach John Hufnagel in a statement. ?He is an integral part of our offence and we look forward to having his play-making ability in the fold for the foreseeable future.?

After leading the three-down football ranks with 15 receiving touchdowns last season, speedster Romby Bryant is also reportedly negotiating a new deal with the Stamps.

Rambo, Bryant and Nik Lewis each hit quadruple digits last season, giving the Stamps a trio of 1,000-yard receivers for the first time in a decade.

Despite finishing with the top regular-season record, though, the Stamps failed to book a ticket to the Grey Cup, losing to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West Final.

?You can?t dwell on it. You have to move on,? Rambo told the radio station. ?But it left a sour taste in my mouth, let me tell you.?

Rambo ? Sky's the limit

Rambo Ken-Yon Rambo at Stampeders training camp.

CALGARY - The way Ken-Yon Rambo describes it, his off-season training sounds as simple as someone trying to drop holiday weight.

To get prepared for the CFL season, the all-star receiver does ?work on treadmills.?

OK, nice leisurely jogs watching the afternoon soap operas on TV. How tough could that be?

Well ? that?s not quite how it goes. These moving walkways are going about 20 miles per hour and are sometimes at a 40-degree incline.

When Rambo is on it ? ranging anywhere from a minute to six seconds, he believes ? his arms and legs are moving so fast you can?t even see them.

Entering and exiting is a violent twist and contortion.

?Rambo is a beast on them,? said linebacker Juwan Simpson, who joined the program down in Dallas a few years ago.

?You see a guy like him, almost 40, in perfect shape. He gets on that thing, runs hard and gets off like it?s nothing.

?I get off with some balance, but he gets off so smooth. I?m jealous sometimes.?

There is certainly reason for anyone to be envious of Rambo?s skill and physical ability.

Exactly who else could suffer a torn ACL one season and come back even stronger the next one like he did?

In 2010, the ?09 CFL leading receiver missed the first four games getting completely healthy and then went out and had 1,172 yards in 14 games.

At that pace, over an 18-game season he would have ammassed 1,572 yards, which would have easily led the league again.

Now that he?s entering ?11 fully ready to go, can we expect numbers like that again?

?The sky is the limit,? Rambo said. ?I think everybody can get better. I think I can get better. In 10 years of being a pro, my goal is always to get better.?

History catching up with Stamps' Rambo.
By Scott Cruickshank, Postmedia News June 13, 2011

CALGARY ? For 53 weeks, the ink had been drying on his portfolio.

That kind of inactivity, for a player in his prime, can signify the end ? or at the very least a severe tapering.

Ken-Yon Rambo not only returned after the aforementioned hiatus, he made Canadian Football League stats-keepers stand up and take notice.

Despite missing the final 15 games of 2009 and the first four games of 2010 because of a knee injury, Rambo hopped back into the Calgary Stampeders? lineup and immediately produced.

?I know how my body reacts,? Rambo was saying Monday morning at McMahon Stadium during the team?s training session. ?I just had to make sure it was stable enough for me to be out there running all those routes.?

He shrugs.

?And it was healthy for the fifth game of the season.?

He makes it sound easy. He made it look easy, too.

Starting only 14 times, he still gathered more than 1,000 yards ? joining teammates Nik Lewis and Romby Bryant at that benchmark.

Starting only 14 times, he still led all CFL receivers in 100-yard games, with six.

In the midst of that headline-worthy comeback, Rambo whizzed past 5,000 career yards, popping himself into the top 10 on the Stamps? all-time charts.

?I became aware of it when they told me,? says Rambo, now ninth on that list. ?It?s not a thing that I look up and I worry about. But, yeah, it?s cool. It?s a big thing, man. Definitely, it?s a big thing. Shoot, CFL is the longest existing football league, so that?s huge. A lot of names have come through here.

?I want to keep on going up the ladder, man, but I?ve got to stay healthy. That?s the key.?

Ken-Yon Rambo still day to day, but seeing improvement
By Kristen Odland, Calgary Herald August 10, 2011

The Calgary Stampeders are still playing a waiting game on Ken-Yon Rambo.

Sure, the injured veteran slotback looked like himself running routes toward the end of practice at Mc-Mahon Stadium on Tuesday.

But the telling factor on whether or not Rambo is good to go on Friday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders will be how his pesky Achilles tendon reacts today. Of course, if he had his way . . .

"I don't like missing games, period," said the frustrated 32-year-old Californian, who missed last week's game against Hamilton and sat out against B.C. earlier this year because of the nagging problem left over from training camp. "I do not like missing games, man. I want to be out there helping out my team. But I don't want to hurt my team."

Understandably cautious, Rambo monitored his stability and his quick bursts on Tuesday. He reported a bit of soreness - but, overall, an improvement.

"It's still a little tender but that's going to be there," he said. "I can do my bursts, but how long can I do my bursts, that's what it comes down to. I want to be out there the whole four quarters. The last Saskatchewan game we played (on July 30), I felt miserable. I felt like I couldn't help out my team so I was frustrated. I don't want that this week.

"I'm just going to wake up (Wednesday), see how it feels, and come to practice. Hopefully, it feels better."
