No chance anyone has brought in 3 better receivers in a single class! Good luck big ten db’s
"I'm coming with something to prove!" Smith-Njigba wrote when he posted the video of the catch to his personal Twitter. "Believe that."
All week, that's what Smith-Njigba did, standing out at The Opening finals, an invite-only event for the best recruits in the country. In 7on7 play he had 23 catches and four touchdowns, according to 247Sports, the best among all receivers and tight ends.
The craziest thing about Smith-Njigba's performance: it almost didn't happen.
After the state 7on7 tournament, Smith-Njigba and his family got on a plane and flew to Charleston, where his brother, Canaan, plays for the RiverDogs, the single-A affiliate for the New York Yankees.
Once he landed in Charleston, Smith-Njigba said he got a phone call from Ronny Torres, the director of player personnel for The Opening. They didn't have a spot previously for Smith-Njigba, but now they did. Smith-Njigba said he didn't even leave the airport.
After almost not being invited to The Opening, Smith-Njigba - an Ohio State pledge who caught 97 passes for 1,828 yards and 20 touchdowns last year - is leaving as confident as ever.
"Going against the best defensive backs in the nation and you're just doing your thing, it builds confidence going into the season and going into Ohio State," he said.
