WR Duron Carter (Official Thread)

linkster

The Alabama football team may be without the services of receiver Duron Carter for the 2011 season, says head coach Nick Saban (via Don Kausler Jr.). Carter had announced his transfer to the Crimson Tide back in April and then enrolled at the end of August. However, three games into the season, Carter has not been cleared because he has had issues with proving his eligibility.
Carter originally began his career with the Ohio St. Buckeyes, where his father, Cris Carter, played college football. He was ruled ineligible for the 2009 Rose Bowl and then transferred to Coffeyville Community College in 2010.
Alabama saw Julio Jones leave early for the NFL in 2011 and could have used Carter running down the football field. This year Marquis Maze is the team's leading receiver with 15 catches for 186 yards. No other receiver has more than seven receptions or has over 100 yards.

I thought it was suspect that they were waiting on some bull shit from the juco and didnt know why it wasnt coming....you are either eligible or not

I played HS ball with a young man who went on to play for the Buckeyes.

6'2, 235, state 100 meter dash champion as a freshman in HS... first time he bench pressed he put up 225. He was in 7th grade. This was the 80's at a small school, so strength and conditioning was still a novelty.

Went on to OSU, and played one season for Cooper before getting the 0.00. Last I heard, he transferred to Coffeyville (his oldest brother had gone there- the middle brother was a Buckeye) and I think he ended his career at Kansas.

But, that's the last we ever heard of him. Greatest athlete I ever had a chance to met, based purely on potential. However, he seemed to only rely on that, rather than do the work necessary to be successful after-wards.

I'm sure we all have stories like that about people we know in life. What's interesting to me about this situation is that, for all the right reasons or all the wrong ones, Duron is still in the news. He still matters to people, again for a myriad of reasons.

I'm hopeful that the fact that he's still newsworthy means that there are still people who are taking time to walk alongside him and give him the guidance and help that I'm afraid my former teammate never got- or that there are enough voices that he can't help but listen and make different decisions for his life.

Duron Carter to redshirt for Alabama

Barring a major surprise, the season-long Duron Carter watch is officially over for 2011.

The JUCO wide receiver transfer to Alabama (and son of NFL legend Cris Carter) has been waiting for full academic clearance since the day of his enrollment in Tuscaloosa, having eventually received the go-ahead to practice but still not to play. That clearance has been believed to have been an "any day now" development for weeks, but Nick Saban told reporters Wednesday that he no longer expects it to arrive this season.

"There's one piece of information that we did not receive, have not ever received and may not ever receive," Saban said. "It doesn't look like he will be eligible for this season."

Carter remains enrolled in school, available for practice and, according to Saban, will be eligible after a year of residency. He will redshirt in 2011 and still have two seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2012.

OK, does the "one piece of information that he did not receive" actually exist? And "he no longer expects it to arrive this season" I know that the USPS is bad, but they're not that bad (i.e. takes a year to get from Kansas to Alabama).

Alabama notes: Carter working hard while relegated to scout team, Saban says
Oct. 12, 2011

TUSCALOOSA -- The scout team isn't where too many top prospects are found.

Starter Darius Hanks said playing there for two weeks while serving a suspension was rough.

Fellow receiver Duron Carter knows all about that, plus some.

The Alabama junior is midway through spending the entire season on the prep team after he wasn't cleared academically following a transfer from junior college.

Head coach Nick Saban said the son for former NFL great Cris Carter is adjusting well to the unwelcome circumstances.

"He works hard. I think that all players in that position should be focused on responsibility to first of all understand why they're in the position they're in, what they could have done differently and how they can improve themselves in the future so they don't have to deal with any consequences by making good choices and decisions on what they do and on what they don't do," Saban said. "He's responded pretty well to that at this point."

Cris Carter: Duron will be eligible at Alabama "right after the bowl game"
Updated: Friday, January 06, 2012
By Mike Herndon, Press-Register

Former NFL wide receiver and current ESPN analyst Cris Carter was in Mobile Friday to speak at the GoDaddy.com Bowl Mayor's Luncheon on Friday at the Mobile Convention Center. Next year, he's likely to visit this state on a more regular basis.

Carter, the father of Alabama receiver Duron Carter, said his son will be eligible to join the Tide "right after the bowl game" and he expects big things next season.

"The process he's going through with Nick Saban at Alabama is fantastic," Carter said during a press conference before the luncheon. "Right now he's just a little incognito, but ... they have big plans for Duron."

The younger Carter signed initially with Ohio State but played the 2010 season at Coffeyville, Kan., Community College before transferring to Alabama. His father said one class kept him from being eligible to play for the Tide in 2011.

"We had one class we couldn't get him finished up graduating before they enrolled in school," he said. "So his graduation came two days late; that prevented him from playing this season."

Carter, who owns a sports training facility in south Florida and is an assistant coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Duron's alma mater, predicted his son will make a big impact in the two years of eligibility he has at Alabama.

"I'm looking forward to big things from Duron," he said. "I'm sick and tired of working out with him, sick and tired of catching balls with him. I'm sick and tired of people questioning his ability, because the kid really can play.

"It's unfortunate that I happen to be his dad. But as a coach - I work with a lot of kids -- I believe Duron Carter will be one of the best wide receivers in college football."
