Posey Brings Big-Time Credentials At WR
Bill Kurelic

Ohio State appears to be in no danger of suffering from a shortage of wide receiver anytime soon, and one reason is the signing of DeVier Posey of Cincinnati LaSalle. Posey, an All-American and top 100 prospect, appears to have all the tools to be a star at OSU.

When the Ohio State coaching staff mapped out their needs at wide receiver for their recruiting class of 2008, their goal was to land at least three great prospects at the position and taking four was not out of the question. In landing DeVier Posey from Cincinnati (Ohio) LaSalle, Jake Stoneburner from Dublin (Ohio) Coffman and Lamaar Thomas from Fort Washington (Md.) Friendly, the Buckeyes grabbed three of the country?s premier wide receiver prospects.

While Stoneburner and Thomas could be catagorized as "athletes," that is they could play more than one position for the Buckeyes, Posey is headed to Ohio State as a wide receiver, pure and simple.

The 6-foot-3 and 205-pound Posey is one of the country?s premier wide receiver prospects, and his best football in still in front of him.

Coach Hazell talks about DeVier.

ozone.wideouts

Wide receiver Devier Posey is another big receiver, in the 6-3 range, that is a game-breaker. According to Hazell, Posey doesn't have good speed, he has really, really good speed.

"He's deceptively fast," said Hazell.

"I saw him run a 10.7 100 meters with my own eyes, it was 50 degrees outside last April, and it was into the wind.

"I looked at the Accutrack clock and it looked like he wasn't running real fast, but when I looked at the clock it came across in big digital letter, 10.7. I said 'Holy mackerel' "He's a 10.5 guy that's 6-3, so he's exciting," said Hazell.

Posey is big, and very fast, but also has that ability to turn average plays into big ones with outstanding skills after he makes the catch.

"Once he (Posey) gets the ball in the open field he's phenomenal," said Hazell.

Posey's highlights bore that out. Posey showed the ability to make tacklers miss, then turn on the jets and outrun people.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Her youngest son, DeVier Posey, a blue-chip receiver recruit for Ohio State, was in repose a few feet away recovering from surgery on his right shoulder a couple of weeks ago. She'd been asked whether that gave her second thoughts about him playing football, with all the hitting that goes on.

Julie laughed.

"You're talking to the mother of a kid who was born missing part of his immune system," she said from their condo in Cincinnati. "So am I sitting here worried because the orthopedic surgeon went into his shoulder, cleaned it up and tightened it up a bit? That's nothing.

"I almost lost this kid three times before he was a year old."

"I'm not too heavy in one area (of life), I like to think I?fd be comfortable in any environment," he said. "Sports, academics, volunteering and my belief in God make me well rounded."

I was sitting in a small conference room Saturday afternoon, watching a news conference featuring five high school seniors who were about to enter the brave new world of intercollegiate athletics. They were finalists for the Watkins Award, presented each year to African-American high school athletes throughout the nation who exhibit extraordinary prowess in the classroom and on the field.

Each young man spoke excitedly about his respective future: DeVier Posey at Ohio State, Kenneth Page at Clemson, Covaughn DeBoskie at California, Brandon Moore at Michigan and Matthew Daniels at Duke.

How awesome is it to be able to get so many great kids who are outstanding athletes and players. Devier's comments about wanting to go against the best in San Antonio to see where he was and what he needed to work on showed so much humility, yet competitiveness at the same time. I am proud to be a fan of tOSU with the kind of program that JT and staff have built around great playing, quality kids.
