One Ohio State football player is poised for a massive jump in production

This Ohio State football player is ready to have a massive jump in production this season.

Every year, people outside the Big Ten are surprised by production from one Ohio State football player. To them, he comes out of nowhere. Of course, Ohio State fans know about these players and aren't surprised when they have a high level of production.

This year, there is one specific player who is poised for a massive jump in production because he finally has the opportunity to get the ball more. That player is wide receiver Carnell Tate. Tate now becomes the second receiver on the depth chart with Emeka Egbuka in the NFL.

Tate has been one of the most underrated players on the Buckeyes for a while. He was a former high four-star recruit and played a decent amount as a freshman. Now, he is going to have a shot to get the ball a lot more, especially with defenders paying so much attention to Jeremiah Smith.

Carnell Tate is poised for a big jump in production for the Ohio State football team

The Ohio State Buckeyes will have a new quarterback this season. It will likely be Julian Sayin, but no matter who it is, Tate will be a great security blanket to throw to. He gets in and out of his routes very quickly and is able to create separation with ease.

That's the kind of receiver who can really help a first-time starting quarterback. He has a great catch radius and can make really difficult catches. With most other programs, he would be their number-one receiver. Ohio State is just so loaded that he can't get to the top of the depth chart.

Recollect that Larry Bird was interviewed before the Celtics took on the Lakers in the NBA finals. He said that it wasn't about how he matched up with Magic, but how the fourth and fifth men matched up that would make the difference. Am agreeing, that when J. Smith goes against their first line CB, and then Tate against their 2nd line CB, that leaves Inniss, and tOSU's fourth/fifth receiver to go against the opponent's fourth/fifth CBs. Ultimately, tOSU's WRs are deeper and better, and so there will be mis-matches, and hopefully big gainers. Ergo, would expect that maybe excepting for the big powers, no one can field a pair of corners that are elite, and yeah, Tate will have a big season. Wild card will be, does tOSU have a QB that can consistently make the throws to those WRs? Guess we'll see soon enough. Here's hoping....

The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by the conference's Faculty Representatives in 2008 as an addition to the Academic All-Big Ten program. To be named a Distinguished Scholar, a student-athlete must have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors during the previous academic year, have been enrolled full-time at the school for the entire prior academic year (two semesters or three quarters), and have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.70 or higher in that academic year (excluding any summer grades). Academic All-Big Ten requires a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher throughout the student-athlete's academic career.

Among the 125 football players in the conference, the Buckeyes had two players recognized as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars: wide receiver Carnell Tate and defensive back Lorenzo Styles Jr.

Tate, who is heading into his junior year, is pursuing a degree in sport industry. In addition to being named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Tate has been named an OSU Scholar-Athlete twice and is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Player of the Year: Carnell Tate is going to demand attention at wide receiver this season

While Jeremiah Smith grabs all the headlines for Ohio State, Carnell Tate is ready to show why he belongs in the conversation as one of the best wide receivers in the country.

What Ohio State has been doing with their receiving corps over the last decade has been incredible. Not only have the Buckeyes seen five wide receivers selected in the first round over the last four NFL Drafts, since 2015 four other Ohio State receivers have been selected in the second round.

Nine receivers drafted in the first or second round since 2015, and that’s not even counting Jameson Williams, who was selected in the first round after transferring to Alabama.

The next Ohio State receiver to be taken in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft is looking like it will be Carnell Tate, who is primed to step into an even bigger role in the Buckeye offense this year. Even though Jeremiah Smith is the best receiver in college football, Tate should benefit from the attention that Smith will demand in Ohio State’s passing attack.

Last year we saw glimpses of the talent Tate possesses, as the Chicago native caught 52 passes for 733 yards and four touchdowns. The best yardage performance for Tate came against Nebraska when he finished with 102 yards, while in his return to Chicago against Northwestern, the sophomore hauled in two touchdowns.

Overall, Tate’s most memorable game was in the Cotton Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal against Texas when he grabbed seven passes for 87 yards. Even though Tate didn’t find the end zone against the Longhorns, he picked up the slack for Smith, who was blanketed all game by the Texas secondary.

Unfortunately for Smith, Ohio State’s opponents this year will likely look at how Texas defended him in the Cotton Bowl and it might be harder to get the superstar the football this season. Add in the Buckeyes breaking in a new quarterback and Ohio State is going to need another receiver to step up.

With Emeka Egbuka now in the NFL, Tate is looking like the perfect option to have a real breakout season in 2025. Last year we saw Tate step up with almost 40 more catches than he had in his freshman season. Now it’s time for the junior to take the next step and show NFL teams why he should be one of the first receivers taken in 2026 if he declares for the NFL Draft.

Will Tate end up having bigger stats than Smith in 2025? It’s highly unlikely since Smith is such an athletic freak that he can make catches while being blanketed. What Tate is going to do is give Julian Sayin a trusted option when the quarterback isn’t able to find Smith. In a way look at it like when Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave lined up together, except the current Ohio State duo have a chance to be an even more prolific combo than Wilson and Olave.

Opposing defensive coordinators will have a lot of sleepless nights as they try to devise a plan on how to defend Smith and Tate, along with the rest of the weapons that the Buckeye offense will throw at them.
