WR Anthony Gonzalez (2005 All B1G, US Congressman)

TJnTN;1566434; said:
That Austin Collie kid is playing damn good right now. How much will this effect Gonzo when he gets back from injury??
Never say never, but Manning loves Gonzo. The Colts love him. I think he should be fine.
I would think that Garcon would be the odd man out, not Gonzo.

Wasn't Gonzo set to move from the slot to Harrison's old spot this season? Isn't Collie playing mostly in the slot so far?

I have Collie in a couple fantasy leagues now, but already had Gonzo in a couple and held onto him. I hope their plans include both of them on the field.

I'm looking forward to seeing Anthony as the honorary team captain this weekend against Purdue. I have thought that he was undervalued as a player at OSU. That seems strange to say but he didn't seem to receive the star power cache of Troy, Ted or others.

Colts WR Gonzalez nears return to practice
By CLIFF BRUNT (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Colts receiver Anthony Gonzalez is nearly ready to return to action.

Gonzalez has been out since spraining ligaments in his right knee during a season-opening 14-12 victory over Jacksonville, and the starter opposite Reggie Wayne has not practiced since.

Gonzalez caught 57 passes for 664 yards last season, and he was primed to take over the No. 2 receiving spot after Marvin Harrison was released in the offseason. The non-contact injury derailed those plans, but coach Jim Caldwell said Thursday that Gonzalez could practice this week.

"It's kind of a day to day thing," Caldwell said. "He's been feeling really good. He has not obviously practiced to this point, but we do feel that he's going to start shortly. When that is, I'm not certain."

Gonzalez has been out since Week 1.

?I just had the chance to visit with him a minute ago, and he feels really good about where he is,? Caldwell said Monday. ?He ran some routes on Saturday. He thought he felt really good. He feels like he?s close to going. Whether that?s this week or next week remains to be seen.

?I think we may see a little something out of him this week.?

Indianapolis wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez: The offseason release of Marvin Harrison and Gonzalez's knee injury suffered in the season opener were expected to slow a high-powered passing offense. That never happened. Pierre Garcon and rookie Austin Collie emerged from obscurity to join fellow wideout Reggie Wayne and tight end Dallas Clark as favorites for quarterback Peyton Manning. Gonzalez will be yet another weapon for the undefeated Colts (7-0) once he returns later this month.

Colts WR Gonzalez may be going under knife
By Mark J. Miller

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver is hoping for a miracle, it appears, so that he can keep trying to catch some balls this season. The word is that the injured third-year pro was drafted in the first round from Ohio State is looking for a second opinion on a knee injury that won't go away, according to the Indianapolis Star.

The word is that he's asking Dr. James Andrews, who is likely to confirm that he's got more than sprained PCL. The thought is that it is likely torn.

If Gonzalez wanted to keep playing, he should have looked in the Yellow Pages for a doctor. Instead he goes to one of the best in the business.

Arthroscopic surgery for Anthony Gonzalez
Posted by Mike Florio on November 6, 2009

Colts receiver Anthony Gonzalez injured his knee during a Week One game against the Jaguars.

He hasn't played since.

And he might not be playing for a while longer.

The team announced that Gonzalez suffered a recent setback, and that because of it he underwent arthroscopic surgery on Thursday.

The purpose of the surgery, per the team announcement, was to clean out loose particles.

Familiar Gonzalez report: He's still 'close' to returning
By Mike Chappell

As Anthony Gonzalez has discovered, being "close" to returning from a knee injury isn't close enough.

The Indianapolis Colts receiver insisted Thursday afternoon that he's on track and close to rejoining the offense after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee earlier this month. The procedure was deemed necessary after Gonzalez aggravated an injury to the same knee during the rehabilitation process. He first injured the knee in the season opener.

"I felt like I was close the last time," Gonzalez said. "So in that sense, it's a little hard to say. I do feel the 'scope I had helped a lot. Now it's just a matter of getting a little flexibility back and all my strength back.
"But I think I'm close."

The team's 2007 first-round draft pick stopped short of specifying a return date. He's likely to miss at least another couple of games. When the time comes, Gonzalez expects "to come back better than ever."

Expectations were high as Gonzalez headed into his third season, his first as Marvin Harrison's replacement in the starting lineup. They quickly were dashed when he sprained a ligament in his right knee while making a cut in the first quarter of the opener against Jacksonville.

Dealing with what amounts to a second rehab with the same knee, Gonzalez conceded, has been "very frustrating."

"It's difficult on a lot of levels, certainly more mental than physical," he said. "You get different opinions, you get different treatment programs, you can get a thousand people telling you they can fix you."

WR Anthony Gonzalez may still contribute this season, Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian says
December 8,
Indianapolis Colts Examiner
John Oehser

The Indianapolis Colts are still hoping to get a contribution from WR Anthony Gonzalez late the season or in the postseason.

As to when that contribution might come, Colts President Bill Polian said he's not sure.

Gonzalez, who began the season as the Colts' starting wide receiver opposite three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Reggie Wayne, sustained a knee injury in the season opener. After having a setback, Gonzalez has yet to play, and Polian said the hope is still that he will return this season.

?Anthony is a bit behind schedule,? Polian said Monday on his weekly radio show on Hank FM 97.1 in Indianapolis. ?We thought perhaps that he might be back starting to practice this week, but as you know, he had a setback. He had to have some arthroscopic surgery to just tweak the knee a little bit. My hope is that we get a breakthrough here one of these weeks and that he'll be back before the season is over.

?Part of the problem here ? and it's true with any injured player ? is the doctors give you a prognosis, but it's only that. It's a prognosis. It's an estimate. Players heal ? and human beings heal ? at different rates. Anthony's just been a little slow coming around. But we know what the issue is and we know it will come around probably sooner rather than later and we're hopeful it will be even quicker than that.?

Polian said Gonzalez ? a first-round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft ? could play in the postseason even if he didn't play in the regular season.

"You could do that, because you have ostensibly two weeks ? hopefully, two weeks to get ready,? Polian said. ?So, you could get him ready in that period of time. It would be ideal to have him play before that but you could get him ready to play in a couple of weeks, I think.?

Gonzalez, Brown return to practice — Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez and Brown took part in Monday afternoon’s short workout.

Gonzalez has been sidelined since suffering a right knee injury Sept. 13 in the season opener with Jacksonville. He was due back in mid-November but underwent arthroscopic surgery, which had delayed his return.

Gonzo returns? -- It's looking more and more like WR Anthony Gonzalez might not make it back this week. And there appears to be a distinct disconnect between what the team wants or hopes for and what he thinks he can do. Colts president Bill Polian said on his radio show that he thought Gonzo could practice and possibly play on Sunday. But when asked about the receiver today, Colts coach Jim Caldwell didn't sound too encouraged. "Today, we'll see," Caldwell said, "but his road hasn't been an easy one." Could be wrong, Colts fans, but if Gonzo can't practice and play this week or next, I don't know that the team can trust him for the playoffs. Maybe I'm wrong, he's played a lot in the past, but he's been inactive for so long.

Gonzalez suffers setback
Receiver misses practice after returning Monday; Colts don't say if knee injury will keep him out
By Mike Chappell
Posted: December 24, 2009

The availability of Anthony Gonzalez for the Indianapolis Colts' final two regular-season and the postseason remains in doubt after the third-year receiver did not practice Wednesday.

Gonzalez, the team's 2007 first-round draft pick, has not played since spraining a ligament in his right knee in the Sept. 13 season opener against Jacksonville. He suffered a setback during his initial rehabilitation and underwent arthroscopic surgery Nov. 5.

Gonzalez went through the Colts' light workout Monday, and team president Bill Polian said on his Monday night radio show the plan was for Gonzalez to practice Wednesday. Barring a setback, Gonzalez was expected to be a game-time decision for Sunday's game against the New York Jets.
It's possible the Colts will place Gongalez on the season-ending injured reserve list, perhaps this week.

Coach Jim Caldwell wasn't able to shed much light on Gonzalez's situation.
"Probably the best way I could put it is today, we'll see," Caldwell said. "But his road hasn't been an easy one, let me put it that way."
Gonzalez wasn't available for comment Wednesday.

Gonzo's situation

Since S Bob Sanders ended up on injured reserve after just two games this season, it's fair to say no Colts player has been asked about more than WR Anthony Gonzalez. And because Gonzo has been somewhat hesitant to discuss his situation in much detail and doesn't talk to us on a regular basis while he's rehabbing his knee injury, much has been left open to interpretation.

It does seem clear, as we approach this 15th game, there is a strong-willed disagreement in opinion on his status. Gonzalez has made it clear to me and fellow Star colleagues the few times he has spoken that he would return when he knew he was ready. He said that with conviction. The Colts, led by president Bill Polian's comment in Monday's radio show that he thought Gonzalez would practice this week and could play this Sunday, evidently targeted the New York Jets game for this return.

As most know, Gonzo didn't practice on Wednesday. He participated Monday, but that was a light workout. I cautioned in the chat that we would know more on Wednesday. And I think we do. That he didn't practice Wednesday is obviously not a good sign. Colts coach Jim Caldwell, when asked yesterday about Gonzalez, said, "Today, we'll see, but his road hasn't been an easy one." That is also obviously not promising.

I thought it odd at the time, after Gonzalez went down early in the season opener, Polian came out on his radio show and referred to the wide receiver as a "slow healer." I can't help but think this ticked Gonzo off.

Some could say his inability to return would back up Polian's position. But we can cite numerous instances in the past when players got hurt and such a tag wasn't slapped on a player. Isn't it fair to say Sanders is a slow healer, too? He's been hurt for two years now. And I can't help but think about how certain injuries have not been disclosed with the specifics demanded, be it Peyton Manning needing a second knee surgery or Edgerrin James' torn ACL and later broken bones in the back. Gonzo didn't need surgery, then he had a setback and did. I don't trust scopes as successful until we see the guy back out there. Remember OG Ryan Lilja, who needed three knee surgeries and was lost for last season. That initial scope was supposedly to be just a "cleaning up" deal. Recall talking to him about it in the offseason.

It's also important to remind the Colts have their doctors with their opinions. The player often looks for a second opinion, as Gonzo did, and sometimes players have been known to stick with what they believe, even if it differs from what team doctors suggest. Further, I've got a doctor brother, as most of you know, and if anything has been impressed upon me from years of chatting about medical issues, it's an inexact science at times. What works for one body doesn't always work for another. Doctors get paid a lot of money to make the best judgment calls, but nobody is perfect.

I don't know if Gonzo will be back this season. The Colts probably wanted to see if he could play these last two games to judge if he could be counted on for the playoffs. I was thinking the same thing when asking kicker Adam Vinatieri about trusting his right knee enough if he can get through these next two games. Vinatieri practiced in full on Wednesday. Matt Stover is still in town, so we don't know if the Colts will carry two kickers for a week or two until they are convinced Vinatieri can handle it.

Colts finally put Gonzalez on IR
By Mike Chappell
Posted: December 25, 2009

A season of high expectations has ended in resounding disappointment for Anthony Gonzalez.

The third-year wide receiver, expected to fill the void in the Indianapolis Colts offense created by the offseason departure of Marvin Harrison, was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list Thursday.

Gonzalez experienced another setback earlier this week in his comeback from an injury to his right knee sustained in the season opener, and the team no longer could wait for its 2007 first-round pick to mend.

"It didn't progress the way we thought it would," Gonzalez said. "Every time I thought I was getting close, I'd have some sort of setback. From a personal standpoint, this has been the most disappointing season for me."

Rest and rehabilitation were prescribed after Gonzalez sprained a ligament in his right knee in the Sept. 13 opener against Jacksonville. However, arthroscopic surgery was required in early November.

Coach Jim Caldwell said it was a tough decision to end Gonzalez's season.
"He's worked so hard and it's been a difficult struggle for him," Caldwell said. "He never was able to get to where he was comfortable and able to perform up to what he would consider to be an acceptable level."

Gonzalez anticipates a full recovery, one that doesn't require further surgery.
"We're out of the surgery phase, hopefully," he said.
